About us

Originally built in 1873 and then refurbished in 2003 after being closed for 15 years, many of the original fittings have been bought back to use including a division bell which rings giving a warning sign that there are just a few minutes to vote.

But what sets us apart?

Our Heritage. Hall and Woodhouse is one of the few remaining regional family brewers, brewing our award-winning Badger beers in Dorset and offering warm hospitality at our pubs for over 230 years.

Our Food. We use regional food partners, typically from family businesses like us, who provide us with quality ingredients that our team of talented chefs (not microwave technicians!) use to create fresh, unpretentious, seasonal dishes.

Our Hospitality. We employ nice people who think like us and enjoy the same things that we do; food & drink, and, perhaps more importantly take real pleasure in looking after people and making them happy.

The fish was very soft and delicate. It had a nice crisp to the batter. The chips were decent but not as soft as I would like them. Tar tar sauce was quite sour and the mushy peas were excellent

In contrast to many reviews, our service was actually quite lovely. From the array of british classics we ordered Sausages, Pie and Mash, Fish and Chips and a vegetarian Burger. Everything wad really tasty, the beer was great as well. Beforehand I was afraid that because of it‘s location, this pub might be a tourist trap. I was proved wrong, I found we got quite an authentic pub experience. Will gladly come again.

A very classic London pub localized across the street from the Big Ben. Even though it is in a very touristic region, the pub keeps its local culture and offers a very fair price. It is a good place for having a beer and a quick bite while resting from walking. There are tables outside with a view of the Big Ben.

We walked in because of the sign outside advertising fish& chips. At first we weren't sure who to check in with. (We also saw a bunch of other people confused throughout our dinner) They should add a sign that says wait here to be seated. Eventually a lady came to us but she almost seemed a little annoyed that we were there haha. We asked if they had room for two. The first level was completely full so she ran upstairs to check. At first I didn't understand if it was okay for us to go up or if we had to wait. Then she saw we hadn't gone up and motioned us up but again she seemed kind of irritated. Upstairs we were seated and placed our order. The food was okay. The fish had a good crisp but the meat inside didn't have much flavor. The fries were okay as well, some were kind of crispy, others kind of soft, but not in a very yummy way, the inside felt kind of dry. Also, I guess having peas on the side is common in England but I didn't love the combination. I didn't mind that much though, it was just the fish and chips weren't amazing. When we got our food, my husband's drink order still hadn't arrived. We asked one of the employees and she brought it by soon after. The ambience here is pretty loud. The people downstairs were cheery and chatty and you can hear it all clearly from upstairs which was fine with me. Overall, the service was kind of slow and not friendly and the food was just okay. And somehow we ended up spending over $80 bucks here for 2 fish and chips and a couple of beers.

Visited early July. It was a decent restaurant to go to if you are around the Big Ben area. Decor is pretty cool and the restaurant was clean. Server was nice. Specialty beer selection was good; we thoroughly enjoyed our selections. We ordered chicken fingers and fish & chips. The chicken fingers were really good; The breading had cracked black pepper and some other seasonings that made it way better than your standard fried chicken finger. The fish & chips were sadly not good. Overall, we enjoyed our visit.
