About us

Late night sessions at this bar revealed that the regulars carried a wealth of experience in musicianship, sound engineering and promoting, and since we drank there anyway we decided that we should get a good band down now and again to listen to.

The bands came. They loved the informality and the fact that we bothered to pay them, and, some five years later the Windmill is known far beyond the backstreet in Brixton where it’s situated.

Although we’re just a little backstreet place, Windmill Brixton has gotten a glowing “Ace Place” review in Time Out, was called “your new favourite venue” by Drownedinsound.com and has been namechecked over the airwaves by the likes of XFM’s John Kennedy and Radios 1’s Steve Lamacq. Gigs have been reviewed in NME, Kerrang! and other mags and The Independent newspaper named us one of the TOP TEN VENUES IN THE UK (the only other London venues to make the cut were Brixton Academy and Cargo).

We feel we get these accolades for a number of reasons. Entry is cheap. Beer at pub prices. There’s a nice candlelit atmosphere, friendly staff and (less friendly) dogs on the roof. But most important of all is the quality of music – it’s no good telling us that you’ll ran the place with your mates; if your music sucks we aren’t interested.

We book and cheerlead bands we like and many have played several times.

Well that’s more or less the history, cos we’re more concerned about the great bands that will be playing in the future.

The great evening out on their folk session. It was Jam packed with listeners and folk musicians. I love that everyone is quiet when the music happens.

Amazing venue with great prices for drinks and always great bands performing. However the guy with long hair behind the bar was a little weird when I tried paying for a drink, I put my card at the card reader at the top (how I do at my workplace) and he told me to hover the card at the middle and made a comment that it was obviously in the middle where it says and belittled me a little with that comment, but at my workplace its always at the top and payment doesn't work in the middle, but I let this slide and told him why I put it at the top. The second drink I then went to get I asked for a drink as you do and then he instantly raises the card reader right up to my face really fast and in my face, thought this was a little rude. Other than this one encounter with one member, everything else is 100% awesome. Again bands great, other staff members great and the vibe of the venue fantastic♥️

A brilliant and gorgeous little venue. Away from the busy streets of Brixton. An absolute live music wonderland that's keeping the scene thriving and has been for years. Definitely a steppingstone stone for up and coming bands/musicians. Plus they have a gorgeous dog on the roof that'll play fetch with you !

Great music venue - a little of the beaten track - but well worth the effort. Frequently host act about to break into the big time or looking to try out new music.

It seems like a famous venue of London but I don't know much about it. I went first time this Friday ans really liked the place and the bands I saw. The night was only 5pounds and I discovered 3 great bands! There is a garden for summer time, but also for not so cold spring night :). They seem to have a good program, I'll probably go back!
