About us

Set right on the River Thames, it's the best pub in Hammersmith for great atmosphere, wonderful fresh food and of course a quenching pint of ale.

Sitting next to the fire, or out on The Dove's riverside terrace, you are not just sitting in any old local – you are a part of London’s rich history.

Hemingway, Graham Greene and Welsh poet Dylan Thomas were all regulars at this characterful riverside pub in west London. A public house has stood on this site since the seventeenth century. Throughout these years our sturdy bar has propped up some of the finest figures of English history. The poet James Thomson composed the familiar strains of ‘Rule Britannia’ here. Charles II romanced and dined his mistress Nell Gwynne here. And in the famous novel ‘The Water Gypsies’, author A P Herbert features it under a cheeky pseudonym; ‘The Pigeons’. Much of the history of The Dove lies shrouded in mystery, but sitting here it’s not hard to imagine the bawdy behaviour of Regency writers, or the delicate conversations of the pre-Raphaelites, all going on under this roof.

In more recent years the pub has played host to some of the finest actors, writers and politicians in London. If you have a moment to spare in between beverages, have a look at the framed list of patrons that hangs over the lower bar’s fireplace. It reads like a Who’s Who guide of the last few decades.

It’s not just the clientele, but the building itself that has some amazing claims to fame. The small space to the right of the bar, reached through an extra entrance only the eagle-eyed will spot, went into the Guinness Book of World Records as the smallest bar room in the world. Step inside it and you’ll see the brass plaque that marks the height the waters reached in the great flood of 1928.

But The Dove isn’t a monument to history – it’s a thriving and much-loved London pub catering for locals and visitors alike. Owned by Fullers since 1796, our current regulars come back for exactly the same reason as Charles II did – the outstanding real ales, fine wines and delicious food.

On a cold grey late November Sunday afternoon, when the high tide of the Thames mixes with the greasy mizzle of the overcast sky, The Dove beckons like a lighthouse on the riverside, it’s gold lettering a bright flash against the drabness of the day. Inside, all warm and wooden, warped with a hundred years and more of intemperance, fire gently hissing with pleasure. The beer is standard Fullers, but brewed no more than a mile distant, so excellent still, but unless you’re here to eat there’s precious little place to sit. So back outside to the riverside terrace, to embrace the view and sit not too long before onwards. #24 #29

The Dove has landed and it was a pleasant surprise! We left a nearby pub/ pizza joint a tiny bit earlier, honestly feeling a bit hangry. The 'rules' for their OMFG pizza wasn't communicated to us clearly so we spent about two hours waiting for God's mercy. We were not served any food though we've been buying pints and pints. Feeling disappointed because of that bad experience, it's really wonderful for us to find the Dove. We were seated right away for a beautiful Sunday roast. Was it earth shattering good? It wasn't, but it's delightful and enjoyable. The waitress was courteous and prompt with the service. The food was beautifully presented and delectable. It was a pleasurable experience and we'll definitely recommend the Dove to our friends.

Amazing place by the water. Great food, drinks and atmosphere. I always recommend this place when I come to London in the Hammersmith area. really wished I took pics of the fish and chips. make sure to go during good weather so that you can sit outside to enjoy the river and fresh breeze whilst planes land on runway 27 in Heathrow from above

Monday night is the way to go if you want an intimate and cosy feel in this classic place. Would be awesome if we could order using qr codes, else I can see long ques during busy times. Some starters were a hit and miss. Didn't do any meals. Will def be here again to get the classic nostalgic feeling.

Great pub by the Thames and tiny little entrance opens up into Edwardian era pub with a wonderful roof top terrace with views over the Thames and Hammersmith Bridge. Would certainly recommend a visit. We had drinks and starters to sustain our walk along the river.
