Classic pub fare in a classic London neighborhood. The upper dining room was closed but we were able to get full service from the bar. Felt like I was in another time.

Excellent so long as you like meat. Fine game terrine and excellent Barnsley chops, steaks, pies and burgers. Good fish too. Imaginative wine list with good wines by the glass and cask ales.

Midway through a busy week, I decided to be a little bit naughty by skipping off work for a couple of hours. One quick text to my friend and a fabricated client meeting later, I was on my way to a boozy lunch. We’d heard the buzz about the recently revamped White Swan near Chancery Lane. Mr Flavour and I were once regulars and couldn’t wait to see the all new version. Unfortunately for him, he was away on business, leaving the ladies to explore in his absence. This former watering hole was historically a favourite haunt of the Fleet Street press brigade, before transforming into a posh pub and dining room. Now reopened as a pub and chophouse, the locals are already queuing up to get in. Upon entry, the delicious aromas from the dining room were beckoning us upstairs. However, rule number one of boozy lunch dictates a cheeky G&T must be consumed before settling in to eat. Gin is something the White Swan has in abundance! Our sophisticated bartender guided us to a Hendrick’s gin, served long and chilled with a sliver of cucumber. That hit the spot! The new chophouse theme was certainly well received. Gone are the white tablecloths and wallpaper, replaced with trendy exposed brickwork and deep stained wooden tables. This lovely room is available for private hire and would be a great place to impress your friends or colleagues. The menu consists of pub favourites, cuts of Britain’s finest meats and fresh fish sourced from South coast day boats and British fishing ports. Had Mr. Flavour been here, he’d have made a beeline for the ‘On the bone’ 45 day-aged White Park sirloin with Béarnaise and big chips. We were craving something little lighter. The Salt baked celeriac, Blue Monday cheese and kale salad with chestnuts was divine and flavoured with a beautifully earthy seasonality. My friend ordered Iron Age ‘pluck and brawn’, pickles and English mustard, which came in the form of a terrine. I couldn’t resist helping myself to a greedy forkful. The Albarinho was certainly a fitting partner for the fish mains to follow. Fluffy fishcakes with peas & tomato relish were mouth-wateringly crisp and bursting with tastiness. I’d never ordered Gurnard before and its meaty texture was beautifully complemented with braised fennel. The big chips were absolutely smashing and left us with no room for dessert. As much as I enjoy a girly lunch, it’s times like these when I miss my handsome husband and his relentless appetite. A quick espresso later, I was headed back to the office with a spring in my step and a very contented belly. I can’t wait to introduce my clients to this wonderful new venue, available for hire 7 days a week.

Very cosy looking pub, comfortable and well laid out. I can’t comment on the food as have not had any but the drinks selection is pretty limited with a decent amount of main stream booze and pseudo-craft offerings. Quite expensive. Often a little lacking in atmosphere.
