About us

Lochmaddy Hotel was established in 1863, and is the oldest hotel in North Uist. We have a rich history, and people from all over the world have come to stay with us in the last 100+ years. Recently the hotel has undergone refurbishment. You will find the owners, John and Lorna - who currently have 13 years experience running Lochmaddy Hotel - on duty most days. John looks after all the fishing guests, giving them plenty of advice and often providing a ghillie service himself. Lorna is at reception most mornings, and is often a great source of local information.

John and Lorna's eldest child Lewis, is general manager, and his wife Eilidh is our fabulous pastry chef / kitchen manager. She is responsible for all our marvellous cakes, which are displayed in the lounge bar. Lewis is on duty most days and you will often see him serving and looking after guests. He can also provide ghillie services for hotel guests.

Their youngest daughter Isla is often seen around the hotel in a rather bossy manner for an 11 year old!

Their daughter Sophie currently lives and studies in Aberdeen, but comes back at key times to help out.

We have a strong link to the outdoors, and John looks after the fishing roster everyday on behalf of North Uist Estate. It is worth noting that guests staying at the hotel have priority on the fishing roster.

Our kitchen team consists of Lawrence and Eilidh. Eilidh is an absolute magician with anything sweet - often creating unique home made desserts, baking and chocolates.

We strive to use as much local produce as we can.

Our front of house team have all the local knowledge you will need and are a great source of information in the evenings. If you want to know where to find the best beaches, some fishing tips or even learn some Gaelic phrases! Lewis, Daniel (our bar manager), Courtney, Paul, Drew and Leah will all be happy to help

Our housekeeping team consists of Morag, Catherine and Jan.

We have a handyman - a young chap by the name of Reuben.

We have 3 youngsters (we call them youngsters only because they are under 18) helping out in the kitchen washing dishes, and doing waiting shifts - Calum, Isla and Mairi. Bar staff in the making.

There is a strong family feel to the hotel, which make our guests feel relaxed. We pride ourselves on our excellent service to you. We look forward to welcoming you all. and hope you thoroughly enjoy your stay with us.

John, Lorna and the team.

Went in well before 11am, kept waiting to order till after 11, told breakfast service was over. They were still producing breakfast baps for others coming in having ordeted on line. Not impressed. Also, the brealfast menu was still displayed prominently. Coffee was ok...

Eat here a few times a year when visiting Uist. Good menu. Child friendly. Enjoy the food. Look out for meal deals. Pleasant staff.

We stopped for a coffee and a bite to eat. We both had lattes, although my soya milk latte was hot, and my husband's was lukewarm. I opted for a sweet potato and paprika soup, and hubby had a chicken burger. The soup was well watered down and lacked body. The size of the bowl was good, just the soup that let it down. Hubby's burger, he said, was dry, but the handcut chips were lovely. The server was good, and I feel the kitchen let her down at £29.00 it wasn't cheap, and £6.00 was just the soup. Nice cakes on display, but no vegan options just gluten-free.

We had an excellent meal, the staff were able to fit us without booking even though it was so bussy. The food was excellent. Would go again
