Cosily worn-in beer lovers' haunt tucked beneath the castle walls, built in 1841 and once run by the local hangman (note the pub sign)
Half a dozen or more well kept ales including Greene King and Timothy Taylors, bare boards throughout with lots of knick-knacks and pump clips, two open fires (one in back snug); some live acoustic music; no children inside, dogs welcome, steps down to sunny back courtyard with heated canopy, open all day (till 1am Fri, Sat).
We were made to feel so welcome and the dog was treated like a celebrity, very dog friendly! Tried all of the guest beers and there was a nice varied selection, all in perfect condition, plus the service was great. The staff were friendly and kept on top of things even though it was busy.
Fabulous pub which is a real ale 'proper' pub. Good range of real ales, which continually change. No frills, no piped music, just ordinary folk chatting and having a relaxed drink. Just like pubs used to be!
Stopped by for a couple of pints on a Saturday night and had a lovely time. I'm well looked after for good beer and a good pub as my daughter runs an excellent pub that finished in the last 16 of the CAMRA pub of the year but the Smugglers is pretty much on par. A lovely pint, good knowledge of the beers from the staff and a really welcoming vibe. An all round winner in my eyes.
Argyle on tour! Just scraped a draw against The Imps!. Super real ale pub both before and after the match. Nice hospitality from staff and a really good atmosphere. You just need to be fit enough to climb the steep hill up past the cathedral to enjoy it!!
Great beers, knowledgeable and friendly staff… The brilliant Customers know a thing or two ☝️😉💯 as well.. An afternoon of #quality conversation and good humour Thank you Lincoln and The Stragglers Inn for making my trip exceptional.. G
