About us

The Dog Inn is Whalley's traditional village inn, offering both excellent hospitality and a unique - and often eccentric - community atmosphere.

Until the late 19th century the premises had its own farm attached. Its original name was The Spotted Dog and a Dalmatian still features on the sign.

It is a sturdy corner-site building adjoining the churchyard, built of local stone, with tall, white painted chimneys and white painted door and window surrounds.

Since 1992, the pub has been run by Rev. Canon Norman Atty and his wife Christine and has become renowned for its warm welcome, delicious food and superb range of cask beers. The menu features home-made food - daily or weekly specials, soups, puddings and free range omelettes. Local produce is always used when possible. Many regulars speak of The Dog Inn as a "gluepot" and, certainly, it is often easier to arrive in it than to leave it!

Whether you are a regular customer, a new arrival in Whalley or a visitor, we look forward to welcoming you very soon!

The child (and dog) friendly inn is open every session and longer hours at the discretion of the licensees. Disabled access is not a problem and there is ample space to park. Major credit cards taken.

Small parties and functions for up to 50 people catered for - free room hire on request.

Been here a few times, always friendly to customers and of course their dogs. The service is lovely and the food is spot on. They also keep a very nice cellar with a great selection of beers.

Unusually, for these times, busy pub. Had a delightful Ham sandwich with lovely crispy chips. However it was a long wait, probably as they were so busy, but why not take on more staff? Staff were most pleasent though despite being run off their feet.

What a great traditional pub in the centre of Whalley. It looks deceptively small from outside but inside it opens up to numerous rooms with seating, a pool room and a lovely beer garden at the back. My first visit yesterday, don't know how I've missed it but I can highly recommend it. Lovely lady behind the bar, great choice of draught beers, and good home cooked pub food at very reasonable prices. Accessibility. It might be possible to take a wheelchair in but inside there is plenty of room and only one are reached by a step. However, parking nearby is very limited.

Food & drink

The pub has a warm and inviting ambience and excellent homemade food is available every lunch time between 12pm - 2pm. Our homemade dishes change on a daily basis (see the specials board). No evening meals, unless pre-arranged - ring for details. Such is the popularity of Sunday lunch at The Dog Inn, it is advisable to book. The chef, Manuel, cooks food using the finest of ingredients, sourced locally (whenever possible) and cooked to order. The bar menu is very traditional offering a wide selection of starters and old favourites including homemade steak & kidney (made with Guinness and served with a Yorkshire pudding); Cumberland Sausage (made locally to a traditional Lakeland recipe, served with a fried egg); and grilled gammon (served with a choice of egg, pineapple, or both). Famous for its omelettes, there is also a range of lite bites on offer for those with a lighter appetite. There is a good range of filled jacket potatoes, sandwiches, tortilla wraps, and salads as well as a Ploughman's lunch. A selection of tempting homemade desserts can be ordered at the bar from the daily specials board. Vegetarians are well catered for and the licensees will do their best to cater for those with any special dietary requirements.
