About us

The Inn at Whitewell sits high on the banks of the River Hodder, where it is hoped it will remain, with spectacular views down the valley into the heart of the Forest of Bowland. This breathtaking rural area is a well-kept secret and a total haven for those who like to walk, fish, paint or just want to stroke their partner and talk to the dog.

I had heard great things over the years of the Inn at Whitewell. We booked for dinner on a Saturday. When we arrived we were left waiting at the bar, seemingly as if we were invisible. The clientele were far from welcoming, my partner is black and felt very uneasy at the way we were treated and there was a distinct lack of diversity within the clientele group. We were shown to a table by a polite grey haired gentleman, then left in the dining room with people being served ahead of us, several servers walking past and no service at all. To note the decor is all FULL of fox hunting pictures, the dining room is very oppressive in atmosphere, no laughter no interaction. We had to ask for a drinks and then for the meal order to be taken, maybe they thought we were there to serve them given the oppressive decor! There was one choice for vegan/ vegetarian and I was told to check the specials which all contained meat. Food was nice though overpriced, chefs clearly are talented. The price was £83 for one main course, one starter and a bowl of chips due to the limited veg menu, 2 cokes and a bottle of wine. Then comes the added service charge for the experience. Both of us appreciate history but I really feel this place needs to also balance that with current society, as it is far from welcoming to the non locals given other reviews. I'd love to see how Rishi would be welcomed! If management take note of any of this it's the impact you had upon what should have been a lovely night out turning into hurt and upset, and how your decor and service reflected that feeling entirely. Just left us wanting to get the hell out of there! I've had better service at McDonald's.

The location, the Inn, the views, the history, the food, everything is exceptional 👍 We were lucky last weekend, passing and thought, let's call in. Every room was packed but we had timed it well, a table by the fire had come available. I tried the Roast Grouse, delicious! With a lovely glass of Red. Fantastic choice of wines and ales. Clitheroe is just up the road. Very pleasant town to take a walk around. Behind the Inn, breathtaking scenery with a walk across the river.

We haven’t been for years but some very good friends invited us to join them for Sunday lunch and we are very happy that they did! Our friends stay most years and we don’t blame them. The young serving staff were attentive and friendly, the food was, of course, wonderful and the location is outstanding. Thank you to all at The Inn and especially our friends for treating us to a grand day out!

We were lucky enough to stay at The Inn at Whitewell and it really was a fabulous place in a stunning location. Our room (room 12) was amazing and did not disappoint. We did however feel disappointed with the food. It was a bit meh! My partner had the scallop starter which were nice but overpowered by cheese. I had the Thai chicken starter which was nice. For main he had the pork belly which was tasty. I had the fish pie (mine is better) needed smoked fish and again too much cheese. Don't get me wrong I love cheese but when you're having a fish pie, you want to taste the fish. For dessert we shared the sticky Toffee pudding which was okay. We both felt it was okay but not great and it's certainly not cheap. Breakfast was good too. We went for the short 4 mile walk over the stepping stones which was a little scary as the water was fast flowing but I'm glad we did it. We were very fortunate with the weather.

We called in here for a drink and fell in love with the beautiful setting and scenery. As it was a hot sunny day so we took our drinks onto the outside terrace where the views are stunning, there is the river and hills. The staff here were friendly, professional and attentive. Whilst we weren't going to be eating on this visit I asked to see a lunchtime menu for future reference and the waitress kindly brought me both the lunch and evening menu. The decor is rustic, old charm and comfortable. There are prints on the walls along with some taxidermy. There is a well stocked wine and gift shop which also serves as the reception. The restroom was clean and had lovely decor. One suggestion might be to have a baby changing area. I will definitely go back and take friends and family for a meal here.
