About us

Nestling between Loweswater and Crummock Water in the English Lake District, the Kirkstile Inn has been providing food and shelter for some four hundred years.

The attractions for the early visitors in the sixteenth century remain today. The beauty that entranced the poets and painters remains unspoilt: the beck meandering through the meadow with the old oak trees fringing its banks, Melbreak towering impressively above, and stretching as far as the eye can see the fells, lakes and woods of Cumbria.

Inside are the same low beamed rooms with welcoming open fires, good food, willing and friendly service and the same warm hospitality that has always characterised a good English Inn.

The immediate countryside is ideal for walking, climbing, boating and fishing and after the exertions of a busy day the Kirkstile Inn provides the enjoyment of a good dinner and pleasant company over a drink.

We arrived without a reservation and they, by luck, had a table become available. We were so grateful. The food was amazing, but the customer service was even better. The staff were very friendly and made us feel special. Thank you so much. We will never forget the experience . Sam and Skye from Sydney

Lovely place to go for a meal although it can be a little bit out of the way depending on where you live. Service here is really friendly. The food was delicious with home cooked chips. A real fire burning to give heat making the evening very cosy. If you like beer and ales you should try there own brews. Loweswater Gold comes highly recommended.

This is an excellent pub to visit. The staff are friendly and welcoming, providing an excellent service. The food is first class, with large portion sizes. 6 of us had Sunday lunch with wine and puddings . It was £63 per couple very reasonable. Dogs are welcome, and there are several dining areas, some overlooking the stunning views. The open fire is gratifying sight on colder days. There's a sizeable car park adjacent to the pub. Easy to find, just look for the red telephone box. Loweswater, just along the lane, has an excellent flat walk suitable for those with difficulties. It is a perfect place to visit.

Stopped there for late lunch. Seafood prawn pasta and traditional fish and chips. Service staff was exceptional and polite - curious to know where we are from. We were treated courteously. Food was delicious. Definitely will go back if I am back in the area. It’s like great good in the wilderness.

We came here for dinner after a long day of hiking and they were fantastic. The food was wonderful, probably the best steak and peppercorn sauce I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was cozy and rustic and the staff was absolutely stellar. We did call and reserve a table ahead of time. We are so glad we did because it got busy fast (not a surprise with this hidden gem).
