About us

it’s prime riverside location makes it a mecca for locals and tourists alike on warm sunny days, especially pulling in the crowds when the Races are on with the rich lot being able to park their boats out front. This does mean that it can get a really busy as there aren’t many other decent riverside locations in York, obviously they receive the top score for this, but also on their prices. As with all Sam Smith pubs it’s all about the cheap local Sam’s beer, although not the best around for its price you can’t complain. To keep prices down they do skimp in other areas and the pub itself is pretty basic with no music and a bit of an old man vibe. It is interesting to see the tide marks from previous flooding and how the pub has coped by fitting plugs halfway up the wall and tiling the whole area, their cellar is even on the first floor. It’s kind of one of those pubs with such a reputation it’d be rude not to pop in for a drink or if you’re lucky on warm days get a seat outside. Although not the best the City has to offer its charm and location more than make up for it.

On a recent business trip to York we stopped for lunch at the Kings Arm. Well no lunch was had and we simply had a drink and left. Why? I have never come across a more rude bartender than the one working here, and is saying something. If this was my establishment this lad would not be there. Not a please or thank you just rude remarks about queuing, what he could do because he was the bartender, and not us your mobile phone. If this lad does not like his job then he should leave and get another perhaps street sweeping. He certainly should not be working behind a bar with his attitude.

A really stunning pub situated right on the side of the river for a great view whilst consuming a ice cold alcoholic beverage. Inside the pub is also very nice and cosy although it is not that big. Staff was friendly and pulled off a nice pint of ale.

This was the meeting place for a ghost tour of York so we had a beer while we waited. Great traditional English pub on the river.

Sorry I didn't immediately see your sign about no cell phones. I was busy being a tourist and thought the place was cool and I enjoy photography. My bad. I said sorry and thanks for the heads up. Thanks bar tender for telling me so rudely. Thanks again, bar maids, for yelling at me that you were serious about the phone when I was merely opening my bag to put my phone away. I responded I understand and that I was not using it but you all chose to berate me rather than see I was complying. It's no wonder your bar is empty; plenty of other great pubs and restaurants in York. Perhaps quit that job and go find some zen and happiness somewhere. It's obviously a toxic environment. Peace out, man.

Very nice bar right on the front of the river. Floods occasionally! Good selection of Sam Smith's beers, friendly staff - typical Sam Smith's pub policy of no phones etc! Great place to visit.
