About us

The Ship Inn is owned and operated by S. J. Cruickshank Limited.

Our Managing Director Simon Cruickshank has many years’ experience in the Licensed trade in Stonehaven, having previously owned both the Station Hotel and the Hook & Eye Bar.

The Ship Inn was built in 1771 and is one of the oldest inns in the area. We have been managing the Inn since May 2004.

In March 2005, the Inn's bedrooms were extensively upgraded and modernised. The two bedrooms that formerly shared a bathroom were made en-suite, and a luxurious sixth bedroom with four-poster bed was added.

In 2009 we took over the property next door, and added 5 new modern bedrooms and extended the restaurant, adding new windows to provide stunning views while you eat.

The restaurant offers a varied selection of quality food and the real ale and large selection of malt whiskies alongside the cosy atmosphere combine to make this one of the most pleasant Scottish inns to visit.

Good food, with lots of options for vegetarians and kids! Would recommend it for a lunch with the family

This Inn is great and very well kept. It has a perfect location right in the harbor and our room overlooks the water. Fortunately, when we checked in we were advised to make reservations for dinner, we did. The restaurant filled up almost immediately and many were turned away. I ordered the haddock fillet (fish and chips) which honestly could be in the running for the best fish and chips I've ever had. I am not afraid of good fried food and have eaten my fair share of fish and chips. I have only eaten at the restaurant once and it's possible lightning struck and I got that perfect fish and chips but I am fairly certain that is not the case, it's most likely consistently great. The totally full dining room and line out the door suggest the same.

We spent a night in this well-situated hotel. The staff was very nice and friendly, the no-frills restaurant was a good experience, with a good and humorous spirit (see picture attached). We misunderstood the breakfast time and got too late, but the staff was helpful and went the extra mile for us to be adequately fed before we went our way, thanks again! Sadly, we had « the room on the backside », no view and situated just over the kitchen air conditionner that was blaring at full speed until the restaurant’s closure… and the windows would not close. The room was a bit cramped, smelled funny and the bathroom usage was subjected to special instructions for the steam to not trigger the fire alarm. On that point, it was a disappointment… especially since the pictures of the other rooms were so nice… We would not have been keen to stay one more night in that room. This specific room really can ruin the experience of this otherwise nice hotel.

Nice location over looking the harbour. Very busy little place. Staff very helpful. No on site parking but there is free parking a few hundred yards away if you can get a space. Room was clean. Shower 🚿 pipe in the way when having a shower kept hitting it while having a shower 🚿. Overall a very nice place.
