About us

'Awarded Pub of the Year 2014, by the Bromley section of CAMRA, and included in the good beer guides for 11 years (just included in 2022), it is an independent family run 16th century traditional country pub in the centre of Downe Village, a short drive or bus journey from Orpington or Bromley. The public bar (Darwin Bar, yes Charles Darwin himself drank here) has three roaring log fires (in the winter), along with leather chesterfields, a piano and a darts board. It also has three small restaurant areas as well as a small snug bar for quiet, more intimate drinks. For the summer, it has a large walled patio / garden area currently covered by a marquee, perfect for relaxing after those country rambles. Bar Snacks, full menu and specials available daily, made from locally sourced produce.'.

Excellent old pub with a really good selection of ales. Open log fires in both bars. A wide choice of food served by smiling waiters. Small car park to the sid.

Lovely little tea shop attached to the pub. My partner had soup and a sandwich, which he said was delicious. I would recommend this quirky little place, when visiting the village of Downe.

Old Worlde Pub with eclectic interior bang in the Center of quaint old Downe home of Charles Darwin. Lovely warm welcome from charming young bar team. Great service and dap hands at pulling a number of pints of Harvey's Bitter. The beer is exceptionally well cellared as you might expect from Camra Pub of The Year 2014. Jackie greeted us as old regulars as we had thoughtful pre ordered lunches. Glad we did for as soon as paid wooooosh out they came. Dear reader these various dishes were exceptional - fresh, varied and home cooked meats and veg - perfectly reasonable prices in todays market - we were all surprised and delighted. Expressing our thanks to the team on departure was a pleasure. PS Good Parking Too PPS Cheap ale Tuesday & Wednesday (why did we go Thursday?? 😂) Entered into our club "Pub of The Year" so we shall see. We ate in the outside marquee. Looks like a nice country restaurant as well in the pub so well worth a visit and road test the menu.

Further to my original review below I went back and had lunch, the ham sandwich was immense. Excellent home cured ham and lots of it. You won’t leave hear hungry! Original review below: Great pub in Downe, very friendly owners and nice drinks to quench the thirst. I’ve not eaten here yet but will do soon.

Very friendly pub and great staff. Popped in by chance and not disappointed. Sausage & mash (great tasting sausages and worth 5 stars) and a prawn baguette (would have liked the choice brown bread).
