About us

It all began in 1860 in the Cotswold village of Wickwar, surrounded by the rolling Wessex countryside. The purity of the locally sourced Cotswold water was impossible to resist, perfect for brewing traditional ale that is both satisfying and easy to drink.

As the brewery grew, so did its reputation and today, although the world has changed around us, our methods have stayed the same. Because once you hit upon a winning formula, well, if it ain’t broke…

There is nothing better in life than good company and great beer. For us, the real magic happens when we sit down with friends to trade stories, and if every good tale comes with a fine ale, it helps the truth to stretch and the good times to roll. We call it tall stories from the tall glass.

Not only do we support pubs across the country, Wickwar Wessex Pub Co even has its own, binding their communities together in the time-honoured tradition with a natural contemporary twist. No one can deny the sense of belonging a good pub provides and when you find yourself in your comfort zone, you know you can shut out the world and relax. It’s the escape that only a British pub can offer, and it’s something to celebrate and cherish.

Always a lovely place with good choices on tap and friendly staff - also the best pub dog in Bristol! I organised something here a month ago and after just a mention to the bar staff the day before we arrived to reserved tables in a section of the pub! Lovely service :)

Went in with my elderly Mum for a pint early Sat Evening on our way home as we live locally, she accidentally fed a dog some peanuts, who turned out to be the barmaids, approached by the barmaid asking quiet rudely I may add, not to feed the dog and ask the owner first, we had no idea it was a pub dog and if so maybe you shouldn't let a dog roam freely around a pub if you are so precious about it being fed, rude women needs some manners. We won't be coming back here....thanks

I was wondering down Whiteladies road on a Sunday evening and this pub was one of the few places that looked open and serving food. I wasn't certain I'd want to go in, as I could see the rugby flags and a large video screen showing sports, and I don't usually go into sports pubs. However, I could see LGBTQ pride flags from outside, so I felt reassured. The inside is quite roomy, plenty of space to move about, and busy but not too crowded on a Sunday night. Best of all, the music is low key and not too loud, and the video screen is muted, so it's quiet and peaceful inside. (I don't know if this is the case on other nights but on Sunday it's great.) They have a limited menu - just pizzas - but they are tasty and actually pretty large for a single person; one pizza could easily feed two quite happily. Currently offering "Pizza and a Pint" for £12, not a bad deal this end of Clifton. The bar is small but stocks a really nice selection of good quality spirits, enough to cater to just about any taste, and the amber ale 'Bob' is absolutely delicious. Bartender was quick, slick, and very friendly and welcoming. There are clearly a number of regulars as she spoke with many people with great familiarity. All in all a great ambience, nice little find on a Sunday evening in an area I don't often frequent!
