About us

The Horse & Groom, Upper Oddington is a quintessential English Country Village Inn, dating back to 1580. This Grade II Listed Cotswold stone inn is full of character with exposed stone-walls, flagstone and oak floors, hefty beams and roaring fires and from its early days as a simple hostelry it has been updated without losing its wonderful charm.

An independently managed Freehouse with open log fires, a bar, large dining area, outside terrace and beer garden, complete with a large private car park. The Horse & Groom is a great place to relax, eat, drink and indeed stay overnight with a guaranteed warm and friendly welcome from our experianced team.

Featured in The Good Pub Guide, Alastair Sawday’s Special Places, Good Beer Guide, Michelin Guide to Pubs, amongst others, this ‘Little Gem in the Cotswolds’ is situated in the beautiful conservation village of Oddington and in an area of outstanding natural beauty, 1.5 miles east of Stow on the Wold, close to Cheltenham, Cirencester, Woodstock, Oxford, Stratford upon Avon and Warwick.

Dogs are welcome in the barand garden but regrettably not in the bedrooms or main restaurant area.

A lovely pub and outside areas, however service and food was a massive let down. Went for Sunday lunch, had a drink first In the garden and the arrived at 1.30 to be seated, got given menus only to be told there was no beef and only pork available or the steak. At 1.30!? Most of us chose the pork, was left waiting for ages so had to get someone's attention to order, seemed to be only 3 people running the bar and the restaurant, asked for tap water which was forgotten, tried to get someone's attention to order drinks but we had been left half an hour now so I went up to order. Pork when it came was so thickly cut it was chewy and grey. No roast potato's given on one of the plates, gravy was like water. No flavour to anything except the cauli cheese which was nice. Table behind us also complained. Most of our plates were left full so we explained and manager came over and offered 50%off bill which was good service in the end. A real shame as saw the reviews were good but definitely would not return.

I don't normally do reviews but our party of 4 have just enjoyed the most fantastic Sunday roast at the Horse and Groom (30/7/23), without doubt the best pub roast I have ever eaten. The staff were polite and attentive, even bringing water, treats and offering a blanket for our dog to lie on. What's not to like, congratulations to all the staff at the Horse and Groom.

When we arrived the barman he just graunted that we had 5 minutes left to order food so we ordered 4 fish and chips it arrived quickly and hot. The food was very good. The barman was very grumpy, when we finished eating he kept staring at us so I said are you waiting for us to leave he grunted 'nah' I said pardon so he grunted 'nah" again. He never asked if the food was alright or if we required a dessert. We will not be going there again due to the miserable barman. It helps if the staff are pleasant. We didn't leave him a tip.

Visited twice over the weekend, once during the day for drinks and the following evening for dinner. The gardens are huge and there's no better place if you are a dog lover or have one with you. Great place to soak up the sun too! Dinner was superb. Amazing food and wine, matched by extremely good service. Two words if you go for dinner though... Ham Hock. The best you'll ever have.
