The Hop Pole is a traditional English pub, with a beautiful canal-side setting, boasting a beautiful outside drinking and dining area.
It has been renovated to an exceptionally high standard with contemporary design in 2009/10, and opened in July 2010, presenting the area with a colourful, bright outlet, specialising in great pub food, benefitting from a fabulous collection of quality wines and real ales, many from local breweries.
We are very fortunate here at The Hop Pole, to be surrounded by such beautiful scenery, yet maintain our great position just on the outskirts of the market town of Retford. We have created a raised terrace to the rear of the building, which is bathed in sunshine throughout the day, and has a great view of our ‘Moorings’ al fresco dining and drinking area, situated yards from the bank of the Chesterfield Canal.
We had lunch here today. Fish n chips they were absolutely delicious. We had to wait a while because they were busy, but well worth it. The food came fresh n red hot. The batter was crispy n light. We were well looked after staff were friendly but not intrusive.
We visited The Hop Pole for the first time for a family wedding, great atmosphere, staff were amazing, very pleasant and helpful, live music, food we had was good but not amazing for a wedding, could do with a bit more parking but overall great experience 😀
The food was lovely. Had rustic bread and butter to share, a pasta bowl and pie of the day. The spinach tortellini was so tasty.
Pleasantly surprised! One look at the menu yielded little of appeal and an expectation of maximum price for a minimum portion. However, after ordering our food arrived promptly, looked appetizing, tasted good with decent portion sizes. Although I was a little disappointed with the chips which came several minutes after my main course, 'fresh out of the fryer' but hard and chewy nonetheless. The decor and ambiance are lovely and I think in part that's why my chicken breast and chips cost 18 quid. The wife was happy with her prawn and chorizo linguine for £17 which is all that matters. Can't fault the staff who were excellent.
Great location, in the winter it has raring fires, in the summer. Amazing outside space along the canal. Fabulous Sunday lunches, and if you want a cocktail - order any of them - they are all fantastic!
