The One Crown Pub is housed in a beautiful Grade II listed timber framed building. It was largely constructed in the 1500s, with further developments being made in the 17th and 19th centuries. Original features such as the ceiling beams remain intact and integral to the buildings structure and character.
The pub, originally an inn which could provide accommodation for two guests, was established in order to cater for the local and passing coach trade. The earliest legal record of the pub dates back to the 1750s, when the landlord at the time, Jeremiah Friend, obtained the pubs first full licence. Over the years the pub has changed hands on number of occasions, and has been owned by significant figures in Watford’s history including renowned brewer Edmund Fearnley Whittingstall.
The local pub is a British instituation and it is very sad and far too common to see them closing all over Britain’s high streets. The One Crown team is therefore committed to ensuring that this gloriously historic pub not only survives, but that it can be the best it can possibly be. We aim to create a setting and atmosphere, and to provide excellent levels of service so that the people of Watford have a traditional public house on their high street that they can be proud.
The pub has recently had a full renovation, the aim of which has been to bring out the best of the original and older features of the pub (such as re-exposing the centuries old fire places and brickwork walls) whilst also ensuring it is fit for purpose in the 21st century.
We provide an excellent range of beverages to quench your thirst, such as craft beers, rotating real ales, premium lagers, a fine selection of wine, cocktails and spirits. Check our specials boards for drink offers.
We have also reintroduced food to the One Crown and have a fantastic new menu incorporating both traditional pub grub as well as more modern dishes. We also have a new dining area and will be offering hearty roast dinners on a Sunday, with our Yorkshire Puddings cooked by an actual Yorkshireman!
At the One Crown we are lovers of live music and will be hosting regular gig nights both inside the pub and in the newly refurbished garden where weather permits. We are aiming to showcase the best of Watford’s up and coming talent.
So come on down to what we believe is the best pub, on the best high street of the best town in Great Britain as we move into the future with Audentior.

Friendly atmosphere, draught pints very good. A superb pint of Guinness 😃
Great friendly pub, great prices for the area as well 👍
Perfectly acceptable older pub, with traditional decor and decent selection of beers. Some of the draft ales were off (mid afternoon on a bank holiday) Landlady welcoming and efficient. Pub ideal for a quiet pint while waiting for the shoppers. Gents cubicle out of order at the moment but shopping centre loos are within 2 minute walk if you are stuck
One of Watford's oldest pubs. Nice little pub. They do need new toilets to make the pub that bit better.
Popped in on the off chance, fancied a quick drink in the oldest surviving pub in Watford, very cosy, very friendly, would highly recommend their Ferrero Rocher shots!
