About us

Built on the ancient Roman road of Akeman Street in 1901, the Akeman in Tring reopened its doors in 2007. Our Victorian building was designed by acclaimed local architect William Huckvale, and several original features have been retained, including the Victorian façade and the fireplace in the bar. The wood panelling, full-length windows and warm décor have transformed us into a destination venue located just seconds away from the centre of town.

Our courtyard and decking area comes complete with fireplace and comfortable seating options, while one of Hertfordshire’s most diverse Woodland Trust sites, Tring Park, is a short walk away. This historic park contains mixed woodland and parkland landscaped in the late 17th and early 18th centuries by Charles Bridgeman, and is home to a variety of plants, birds, invertebrates and mammals.

The provenance of our food and drink is equally impressive with our extensive wine list having been compiled with help from Enotria&Coe, a company with a history spanning more than 125 years. In addition to stocking popular beers from Fuller's, we have a selection of locally sourced drinks from Tring Brewery.

Traceable from field to fork, our Mediterranean-inspired food is served from 8am, Monday to Saturday, and from 9am on Sunday. Dishes include steaks and fish cooked in our charcoal-fuelled Josper grill, as well as pizzas, pasta dishes and home comforts, like our 12 hour roasted pork belly. For every pork belly dish sold, we donate 25p to the Woodland Trust, and we proudly sponsor Tring Rugby Club and Tring Cricket Club.

The staff are absolutely lovely and there’s no doubt it’s a beautiful restaurant but the food is just kind of okay. I wouldn’t rush back. I was so looking forward to a fish finger sandwich after seeing it on the menu online but what I actually got was some sort of crispy thing - maybe a panini, I’m not sure what to call it, which was quite crunchy. Add that to the fish that was mostly crunchy batter, and it was rather difficult to eat!! The roof of my mouth is still destroyed 😂 The tartare sauce and accompanying salad were delicious. The chips were okay but not the hottest. My friend had the mushroom eggs Benedict thing but the muffin was really tough and she had trouble cutting it. My dessert was an apple pie that was 80% pastry, and some very sour apple slices in the bottom which I abandoned. Brownie was apparently very good. Although we weren’t in a hurry and were happy to chat, the whole lunch took two and a half hours, which was a while given it wasn’t busy. Altogether not terrible but not fab either.

A nice location and atmosphere with a good variety of choices on the menu. Parking is a bit difficult.

Tasty lunch. Good to see brunch choices served right through til 5pm so opted for the avocado, salmon and eggs on sourdough. Sliced red chillies was a nice touch.

Thanks to Lucy and all staff at the Akeman for a great evening. The service was great, the food was very nice and all served in a nice atmosphere. This was a treat for my wife's birthday and wedding anniversary. Flowers were even waiting for my wife at the table which I organised with Magnolia of Tring florists. I would recommend this venue. Thanks again.

A local legend, great friendly staff and team serving good honest food for all ages. Whether going as a couple, a family or a large group there is something that can be found on the menu here for everyone tastes. Several of the menu items look pricey, (im looking at you steaks) but are wonderfully cooked and worth it. The team were also very accommodating with a couple of allergies, showing they had knowledge of the food they were serving and how to make everyone feel welcome.
