About us

The Cross Keys is a traditional British pub located in a quiet wooded area in the Hertfordshire countryside. We offer a family friendly atmosphere, homemade food, real ale and a large garden with a children’s play area.

We are located within easy reach of Wheathampstead, Harpenden, St Albans, Codicote and Hitchin, great if you’re fancy a nice walk or cycle! The Chiltern Cycleway goes past the front door so why not pop in and re-hydrate. For the city folk among you, we are only 25 miles from Central London, so if you fancy a break from that commotion, come pay us a visit.

We regularly cater for a variety of special events. Please get in touch if you have an upcoming special event. More information can me found on our “Venue Hire” page.

In addition, we offer superb en-suite accommodation. With outside entrance at a reasonable price. We offer both twin and king rooms. See the “Rooms” page for more details on our accommodation.

We had a tasty Sunday roast with a delicious homemade dessert. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Book because they're popular!

Great little pub, off the beaten track in Gustard Wood, perfect for a stop off for fabulous refreshments and lovely food. The staff were very friendly and helpful too.

The staff are fun, friendly and welcoming. Lucy who manages the bar at lunchtimes on a very regular basis is particularly good natured and we always have a laugh or two. The food is homemade by Lucy’s mum in the busy kitchen and her dishes are delicious and inventive. She likes to experiment with new and different menu items. For instance, she makes a lovely chicken curry, but then simultaneously offers an imaginative vegetarian curry using halloumi cheese, cashew nuts, spinach and mushrooms. Absolutely delicious... my ‘go to’ dish even though I’m not a vegetarian! Top quality pub food. Good beer, a large garden area and plenty of parking. What’s not to like!

Had a lovely time at this popular, very low-key pub. I last visited 30 years ago and I cannot see much has changed... Except the brand new toilets. Had a good, filling, lunch. The bill was very reasonable as well e.g. £9.95 for a big main course. Three of us shared basket of whitebait with buttered bread. Mum had (deep fried) seafood platter. She enjoyed it but it was a bit heavy she said. I ate excellent homemade beef lasagne: plenty of mince, fresh herbs and cheesy topping. Could not eat all the garlic bread, probably because we had overordered (!) huge chips side order. Very friendly staff, quick service. Small negative: I prefer condiments served in bowls etc. Let's dispense with plastic throwaway sachets.
