About us

Dating back to the 1800's, The Fish And Eels was originally owned by the Christie family brewery who used it to sell Christy's Hoddesdon-brewed ales. We have always been popular as a riverside inn, with numerous landlords throughout the years - the most notorious being the Reverend Samuel Thackery who, after being dismissed from his chaplaincy, took to inn keeping instead.

A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

Event: Came here for my Son's 18th. They were the only local restaurant/pub I could book which could accommodate the 6 of us. Food: The steak I had tasted great. The portions could be bigger though. My daughter's meal was very small, despite being an apparent adult portion. Staff: The staff who served us were very pleasant and helpful. Environment and atmosphere: It has a nice comfortable feel to the place. I'm not sure I like allowing dogs where people eat, but I'm certain dog owners would love this. Overall, would I return?: Yes đź‘Ť

We visited The Fish and Eels on Christmas eve, there is parking on site and had few spaces free, you do have to resister your car at the bar. As we entered the bar area was very busy and Loud, with people and singer. We were sat to the right of the entrance in the restaurant and lot quieter surrounding. Our Waitress was Nat B and she was professional, attentive and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, gravy on the side, every little thing was fine. The food was served in a timely manner and was very high standard, there was no issues. We all had a lovely evening and will visit again.

Christmas Eve 2023. We made an unplanned stop during the dog walk, for a quick drink. Ended up having the festive menu and more than a quick drink. Food is very good and the atmosphere was really Christmasy. A lovely lady singing live, lots of lights, the fireplaces warming up the place. What is the best thing though is the customer service! Old school, good, respectful customer service. Served on the table, we didn’t have to look for our waitress once. It was just like she knew when we needed something. Eddie got lots of treat, brought to the table, offered water and a blanket. We really couldn’t work out why this place has got only 3,8 on google. Should be a 4,3 and above. Thank you guys!!

Came here for a drink and chill. Staff were not the friendliest I have to say. I asked a member of staff politely to wipe the dirty table and just got a death stare and no communication at all. It was as if I’d asked for a crazy request! Ordered drinks and fries to the table through the app which was very convenient. The fries were really tasty but overpriced for a tiny portion. The one thing this place has going for it is the view. Customer service really needs to be looked at!

We went for a bite on one of their busiest day. We were pleased to be quickly seated on arrival (after being gently reminded to enter our car registration at the bar for free parking, which was a nice touch). It was a hot day and the terrace was busy. There was still some seating space indoor. The outdoor space is located by the river and provides a nice and relaxed backdrop to afternoon drinks with family and our friends. The indoor restaurant is nicely laid out with light throughout the room. The menu has a nice variety of starters, mains and deserts with the usual Sunday roast choice. The desert choices are fun too. We went for the fish main on a bed of potatoes, with a side of greens. The other dish was a chicken forestière with skin on chips. For dessert we both went for the trio of desserts, including a chocolate pudding with a gooey centre on top of which there was a scoop of honeycomb ice-cream, a lemon sort of mini cheesecake and a small creme brûlé. All of which were decent sized portions. Let's just say we were not hungry by the end of our dinner! The only reason why I gave 4/5 stars for the food is because the presentation was a bit simple but that's me being picky! Definitely a place we will attend again in future! Great pub!
