About us

The Bricklayer’s Arms was originally two cottages, built in 1722 from local flint and brick with a third dwelling added in the early eighteenth century. One of the cottages was a butcher shop with the other housing a blacksmith’s forge. A village shop was also added in the late eighteenth century.
In 1832 The Hon. George William Cavendish converted one of the cottages into a Benskins Ale House. It remained that way for more than 140 years when the other two cottages were purchased to extend the pub. The most recent expansion was a sympathetic conversion of the outbuilding and barn into the restaurant’s present configuration. In 2003, owners Sally and Alvin Michaels transformed the Bricklayers Arms into an award-winning and nationally recognised restaurant. With the reins now handed over to General Manager, Matt Jackson, and Head Chef, Miro Schelling, The Pub continues to thrive under the new Management of RedCat Pub Company.
Enjoy our selection of real local ales or choose from our extensive list of over 120 wines carefully selected to complement our award-winning English and French fusion menu. We use the freshest of produce, sourced locally whenever possible, with seasonal changes and daily specials to entice the most discerning of tastes. Recently awarded our first Rosette for culinary excellence you can sample our Bricklayers famous home-smoked fish or meats, delicately flavoured from different woods, and try our local game and fresh fish dishes. Our sauces and produce are prepared daily for absolute freshness and quality. We are passionate about our food and believe in giving good value and quality to assure you of an excellent meal on each visit whether it be for lunch or dinner.

Fantastic evening at the Bricklayers. Me and my partner visited on 22nd December for a Christmas meal together. At first it didn't appear there was a lot of staff working, and especially so close to Christmas being such a busy evening we did wonder what the service would be like... but the staff were absolutely incredible! We mainly got looked after by a lady we think was called Harriet.. She was warm, friendly and looked after us so well. Everyone at the Bricklayers is very professional and kind. The Bricklayers attention to detail especially in respect of allergies puts you right at ease and makes you feel in safe hands. The presentation of the food was lovely, timing between courses was perfect, and everything was delicious. We had read some mixed reviews from this year about the Bricklayers but please don't be put off going... it has become a really special place for us. We usually only come around Christmas time to have a lovely meal and it exceeded all expectations. Thank you to all the amazing staff who took such good care of us.

Absolutely beautiful. The food was lovely, great drink selection, and an amazing sticky toffee pudding.

Friendly staff, attentive and good sense of humour. Extensive interesting wine list. The food was stunning, the best flavours combined with creativity and flare.

Gorgeous pub and a gorgeous olde world atmosphere, except for the tacky sign that is. Staff were absolutely wonderful, but the food was one of the worst I/we've had in a pub. My wife and I had their burgers, which were tasteless and overcooked. The salad was lacking in imagination and the chips, I could count on two hands.... My son had the battered cod, which looked like it had been on a diet for six months and came with over cooked peas, watery tartare sauce, and a handful of chips. Now my daughter was more adventurous and went for their calamari dish. The calamari was overdone, and the dish just lacked in imagination. This is the only time I will say this... I would rather have eaten in Wetherspoons. The staff were wonderful...

Food and service are virtually faultless. This is a cute little gastropub with a nice garden. The food has little twists or fusions and every meal has been delicious. The desserts in particular are varied and amazing. The staff all seem happy and are attentive. We will be back!
