About us

We are a local pub in the heart of Southville serving local ales, freshly prepared food & mouth watering wines.

We offer an extensive menu consisting of items from high quality, local suppliers and pride ourselves on delivering some of the best pub food around. Come and try some delicious burgers, ribs, dogs and other classics.

Our famous stone-baked 12” pizzas are made from organic flour and you will often see our pizza chefs kneading away to create their own dough. If you come down & visit us on a Monday you can enjoy 2 of our fantastic pizzas for just £12 (lunch & dinner).

The Hen is a fan of real ale & takes pride in pouring a great pint. Depending upon the season there are always three or four real ales on the bar, these tend to be local to the region with the guest ale changing every two weeks. The Chickens are Cask Marque accredited & have so far achieved 100% each year.

As the locals all know too well here at The Hen, the main man in charge of keeping all the chicks in check is Henry the pub cat who you will often see sat on his throne in the main bar.

Skip the Sunday roast! Maybe the pizza or burger would have been a better option because the roast dinner was really not good. For £16 pounds it consisted of 3 potatoes, 1 carrot, 7 shreds of cabbage, 2 bits of dry pork belly, 50p size bit of crackling and granule gravey. I asked if that was it and the waiter agreed it wasn't much so got more potatoes and carrots from the kitchen, this arrived after we'd finish. The only good thing to come of it was that we know not to go there for food on a Sunday again.

It's not my cup of tea, a very hipster, and pretentious, but that's the norm with modern pubs inside. It's very open with lots of seating staff, which are friendly, etc . Foods meant to be good, though I didn't find out as it was absolutely rammed after a bears game. I'll stick to my old skool spit and sawdust pubs, but it might be the boozer for you

I usually attend the Jazz Club on Thursdays. It's very busy on Comedy Nights. Good selection of craft beers but beer on pump stopped a while ago. I heard the pizzas are good but haven't tried one. Can be very noisy! 🎺 🍕🍻

A good solid pub with a comedy club upstairs. Really enjoyed a comedy evening here, and there were a few spare tickets available on the door for purchase allowing my partner to come last minute (cash only, cash machine next door in co-op). Alongside a large selection of IPAs they also served frozen margaritas from a slushi machine which was prettttty cool! Bar upstairs and downstairs - upstairs one is quite small though and was only open before the comedy and at the interval.

We went for the Sunday roast. I'll start with the good things - excellent service, a great roomy interior with lots of natural light, pleasant neutral decor, background music not too loud. Delicious coffee and chocolate mousse pudding. Sadly, the mains weren't great. The chicken schnitzel was supposed to be served with fries but wasn't, and we had to ask for them (we did get them, and they were fine). The schnitzel and salad were very nice, and so was the roast beef, but the Yorkshire pudding's crust was burnt and the roasted potatoes were hard and dry. All in all, four stars.
