About us

Originally built in 1720 as the Officers Mess for The First Royal Regiment of Foot Guards, the Grenadier became a licensed premise in 1818 to serve as The Guardsman Public House; it was latter renamed The Grenadier.

In 1656, the First Royal Regiment of Foot Guards was formed. As a result of the heroism they showed whilst fighting off the French Grenadiers at Waterloo in 1815, they were renamed by Royal Proclamation as the ‘First Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards’, thus becoming the only regiment in the British Army to be named for one of its battle honours. The building was built in 1720 as the home to the Foot Guards Regiment. It was famously known as the Duke of Wellington’s Officers Mess and was even frequented by King George IV.

It is so called after a young Grenadier, affectionately named Ceric by locals, whom is said to have been caught cheating at a game of cards. The story goes that his comrades savagely beat him to death as a punishment. An exact date as to when this happened is unknown, but it is presumed that that fateful night was in the month of September, as this is the time of year that The Grenadier receives an onslaught of supernatural and spooky activity! Past visitors of the pub have attempted to pay off Cedric’s debt by attaching money to the ceiling, which, after over a century, has been totally covered with transatlantic money.

I decided to take some family members there for Sunday lunch back in August. I hadn't booked as it was a decision made on impulse. The bar maid was so friendly and equally helpful in getting us a table for four. The food was excellent and the wine list, being a wine merchant, was very interesting as well as reasonably priced for top French & Italian labels with bottle age from good vintages. The whole experience was absolutely brilliant as well as relaxing in such a historical little pub of sheer class. Made even better by friendly, warm and inviting staff. Can't wait to go back again...

Great selection of beers and friendly bar service. The fish and chips was a good large portion and cooked to perfection. The beef Wellington was indeed yummy and proper albeit pricey. Venue felt like dining at someone’s house with tables spread across multiple small rooms. Overall, an enjoyable experience and would return.

Very small venue tucked away in a quiet street. We didn’t have a booking and was lucky to get a table on a very busy Saturday afternoon. We had the scallop which was delicious followed by the fish and chips. I am not normally a chip person and I find myself unable to stop eating the chips! The sauce tasted handmade which was a treat. We have already decided we will be coming back to try the beef wellington next!

Nice place, not sure how anyone finds but it was crowded. We were happy they could take us without reservations. The Beef Wellington was good. The duck was not very tender.
