About us

The Greenhead Hotel is at the gates of your Roman experience and the site of the former Magnae Carvetiorum fort, which pre-dates the building of the Wall. Indeed, some say this is where Emperor Hadrian first stopped for a cup of tea and to survey the area. It is also said he was so impressed that he decided to keep it for himself and so built the Wall to keep everyone else out. Seriously though, we are located a few hundred paces from the Wall and the nearby Roman Army Museum at Carvoran. The Military Road goes passed the front door to give easy access to other wonderful sites such as Vindolanda, Housesteads and The Sill.

This is a fabulous area and we are on c2c Route 72, one of the most popular cycle trails in the country. Equally, this is a superb base for a wide variety of stunning walks – the famous Pennine Way goes through the village.

At the Greenhead, we embrace the traditions of the English village inn. A genuine warm welcome, good food, craft ales and a very comfortable bed for the night. We have four well-appointed ensuite bedrooms within the hotel and across the road; the Bunk House sleeps up to forty guests – popular with walkers and cyclists alike. Pop in for a cup of tea and a snack, or a meal with a pint or glass of win.

We has been meaning to try this place for ages after bumping in ti the owners at another foodie place last year, we were walking in the area and decided to pop in to have a nosy. We ended up staying for lunch. What a tasty treat it was for all of us. The service was top notch by both ladies on today, a great asset to the establishment no doubt. Our food was really good and presented so well. Highly recommended, thank you.

We came here for a meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We weren't disappointed. The meal was one of the best we've had in years (not overreacting either). We both had the cod loin with a bottle of red and a bottle of white. No room for dessert, sadly. The service was excellent. We'll definitely be back.

Popped in for lunch. Had the tastiest open steak sandwich I've had in many a year. The welcome and service was excellent. Worth a visit when passing.

Can't say enough about our stay. Cozy room, gracious and accommodating staff, very good food and drink. They set a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. Definitely recommend.

Didn't stay so I can't comment on the rooms. I was on my way home after recording vocals on Hadrian's Unions new album and we were hungry so we popped in for dinner. Very good service, smiley and knowledgeable. Not a vegan but i tried the cauliflower steak and it was the best cauliflower I've ever eaten.
