About us

Grain Barge started life as an engineless transport barge that carried barley and wheat from Bristol to Cardiff, across the Severn Estuary. Built in 1936 by the Charles Hill shipyard, the barge is now moored in Hotwells, opposite its original berth and near to Brunel’s ss Great Britain.

The boat was bought and refitted in 2007. The new interior uses reclaimed and recycled materials that reflect the boat’s industrial heritage.

Today, Grain Barge is a relaxed and friendly bar/restaurant with spectacular views across Bristol harbour and the iconic ss Great Britain. Serving fresh, locally-sourced dishes and a range of craft beers, ciders, wines and coffees, this unique venue also hosts a programme of live music and comedy from its intimate Hold Bar. Relax below deck and enjoy panoramic views of the river from the light, bright restaurant/bar or sit up-top and watch river life glide past.

Lush pub, not crowded on a Sunday ay all. Lovely staff. Great hot chocolate- so good I had 2! The mac and cheese topped with pulled pork half portion was delicious. Me and my friends stayed here all afternoon and played card games.

Incredible place! Best vegan roast we've ever had (seitan, mushroom & leek pie) with roasties, root veg, green cabbage & red cabbage plus really thick gravy! Really good portion sizes and great value. Good tunes, lovely view over the water and really great staff. Highly recommend this place!!!!

Gorgeous setting, a boat on the river! Staff are so friendly and attentive! We had drinks and a portion of whitebait just to nibble on. What a big portion of beautiful, crispy whitebait! The fish themselves were plump and served with crispy battered seaweed. The dip was delicious and for only £6.25 fantastic value for money considering the portion size!

Always SO impressed with the food here :-) Local, delicious and always such good value. The last few times we've been I've been blown away by how good all the food was. Really good selection of local beers, a good wine list and really friendly service too- really recommend!
