From the early 19th century until the 1920s, 147 High Street had been The Golden Lion.
The name lives on in this Wetherspoon pub. Before the late 1940s, 149 High Street was the Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham Savings Bank, while, before that, it was the City of Rochester and General Permanent Benefit Building Society (in the 1930s and dating from at least the turn of the century).
Stopped on the way home for food, would've had nicer if we'd gone out to the bins and ate from there. Had to wait 30 minutes for food to arrive, The gourmet sirloin was full of fat and gristle the peas, chips and mushroom were cold. The chicken jalfrezi was warm at best, the rice appeared to be swimming in either oily water or butter, the naan bread was oily, the onion bahjee was black n burnt, and the samosa smelt like an over scented joystick, so didn't eat. Overall the food was probably the worst I've eaten in years.
I did not use the hotel as I had already booked another locally. I was on a night off, so although solo, I had an extra drink or two. Opted for the smaller mixed grill and struggled to eat it all, although it was cooked well. If you look at pic, I can assure you I don't eat my meal like this, but i start playing with my food when it's time to leave the plate alone. Lol Service from more than one staff member was with a smile and friendly, which was nice, and a waiter coming up whilst eating checking I was content. It wasn't very busy when I attended this time, but in the past (over 6 months ago), the environment when busy, like all Sunny Spoons, is too much for my liking
Nice pub in Rochester city. It serves plenty of drinks and plates (burgers, pizzas, fish and chips etc.) in fair prices compared with their portion. There are many tables so it is very likely to find one when you visit it.
First time in Rochester and came across this pub. Appears small, but goes a long way back and there's a nice outdoor area at the rear. Used the app to order and got our food quickly. A decent Wetherspoons. Would recommend the outdoor area, weather permitting! No parking. Toilets upstairs.
Chill place with chill staff, doesn't get too chaotic most weekends (depending). Probably best around lunchtimes - good for families. Can't really comment on the hotel but from overhearing other people, the feedback has always been good regarding the quality/value for money.
