About us

We have become world famous by sheer accident but for the very reasons Yorkshire Television chose us, we like to think that the very best of an English village pub has been delivered to an international audience.

Our belief is that many come because of the fictional Aidensfield but

return for the spirit that is Goathland. Your hosts Jean and Keith Richardson have enjoyed Goathland life at the pub since May 1985. They moved here after successfully running a traditional London Pub.

Keith is the Landlord and he takes pride that his beers are some of the best kept locally. His experience in the trade and as a unique host has been rewarded as a Fellow of the British Institute of Inn keeping.

Jean captains our efficiently run kitchen. Her menus are a response to popular customer demand. Traditional good pub food served in times sympathetic to those wanting catching the next steam train. Always looking for fresh new ideas for our special boards 'something to tempt everyone'. They run the pub and hotel with a professional and friendly team of staff.

The community spirit that is a local pub is carried forward with extensive charity fund raising efforts, for our success here we have to thank the generosity of our customers. To date over 12 charities have substantially benefited. Thinking globally as well as locally we are always looking for new ways to be environmentally responsible both front and back of house while retaining quality.

Essentially we offer the convenience of a small hotel but with a big personality.

Very disappointing short break. The member of staff/family owner ? who "looked after us" was so blunt, rude and unhelpful. No questions about our room being ok, the breakfasts being satisfactory or any of the usual chit chat you come to expect from the "hospitality" trade. Hospitable she certainly wasn't. This is confirmed in other reviews of this place, which state it is very expensive and has very poor customer service. She pulled faces when asked questions about the breakfast menu, this was to us and other guests, bluntly replying with, "it states on the menu what you get" and rolling her eyes, when other guests enquired about the foods origin. Breakfast was served, deposited on the table and then she was never seen again, we discovered this was because she was outside mowing the grass. This happened on both mornings !! There was no chance of ordering more tea, coffee, milk or toast. How this place has survived with the same family running it since the early 80's is beyond belief. As for the room, it was very dusty in the corners, dirty tissues were found under the bed, it wanted a good clean. We will not be returning, we will find a different B&B to stay in next time, somewhere with friendly, attentive, helpful staff, who seem interested in their guests well being.

What a massive let down! Rude, rude, rude! Expensive. Literally went back to the 60s as the family room is actually an enforced rule so we couldn't even sit in the empty "Aidensfield Arms" bar as we had one (very well behaved!) child with us. To be fair on reflection I wouldn't want to remain in the same room as the grumpy old boy serving there anyway. Asked for a pint of Landlord, he gave me a half, when I , politely, corrected him he just chucked the half in a pint glass and topped it up. Pretty sure if I was male a pint would've been issued in the first instance. Toilets disgusting! Needless to say we supped up quick and will not return until new management arrives.

Extremely disappointing. Booked a table for lunch. The staff were unpleasant and rude. The menu was limited and the quality of food they served was poor and expensive. Whilst waiting to order drinks I picked up a one page pamphlet from the bar to read about the filming of Heartbeat at the pub. I was sternly informed that they cost 1 pound and would be better reading it at my table. The location guarantees a daily tourist customer base so I guess they just don't care.

Lovely building, shame about the people that work there. No manners, no please, no thank you. This location guarantees a busy day, doesn't deliver on customer expectations. All take , no give. Messy bar area. Dirty toilets. No love. Expensive menu for just regular bar fare. £16 for bangers and mash??? Lots of opportunities here, none used.

Love the fact it still feels very much like the Aidensfield Arms off the TV series Heartbeat! Even the barman was still doing mental arithmetic! You don't see that much these days. Great atmosphere tho beer and crisps were expensive
