About us

The Butchers Arms is a traditional free house pub lying in the heart of ‘Cider With Rosie’ country in the beautiful Sheepscombe valley near Painswick in Gloucestershire.

Although we are well known for our traditional home cooked food, “The Butchers” is still very much a village pub and you are equally welcome to drop by for a pint of real ale or a glass of wine. The area is a magnet for walkers, cyclists and tourists and attractions such as the Rococco Gardens and Prinknash Abbey are just a short drive away. Strolls in the local woods can be as long or leisurely as you wish and the less energetic can drink in the panoramic scenery from our garden terrace.

It was a grey, rainy midweek afternoon. I went in with a couple of special needs adults. We were greeted cheerfully and invited to take a seat by the log burner. We had missed lunches, but that didn't matter. We were out socially and had hot drinks. Coffees and hot chocolates were luxurious. We started chatting to the owner, who has been there for about a year and was settling in well. He was kind and generous to members of our party. We looked at a menu to see what was on offer. A small menu, though there were several dishes that were really tempting along with daily specials. From what I understood, the menu is revised every 3 months. All dishes were very reasonably priced. A lovely country pub, well worth a visit

Staying with the wife close by in Gloucester Premier inn and came across the Butchers Arms. Had a lovely meal with generous portion sizes and all at reasonable prices. Would recommend if you are in the area!

Superb in every way. We were a group of 10 and we stopped here for lunch. What a great choice! The mains were so good that we got tempted into having puddings, which were even better! I reckon you can't go wrong here, probably everything on the menu is going to be nice. Good beer too, and great service. It's a pleasure to see a pub being run this well.

Lovely country pub. Great food and friendly service. Dog friendly. Nice outside areas. Peaceful setting. Great base for walking. Ask for the leaflet detailing 6 different walks that start from the pub.

Very nice village pub in a quiet location. Road travelled to get there was very narrow and not for the faint hearted! Lovely inside with good choice of drinks on hand pumps and seating outside. Well worth a visit.
