Centrally located and a handy meeting point for the motorway network; warm welcome, good local atmosphere, proper public bar,
Traditional décor and tasty wholesome food sourced locally whenever possible. Large car park with ample spaces and an attractive garden.
Readers are eager to point out that the very friendly hardworking landlady at this relaxing pub is exceptionally good at her job-visitors are really made to feel like locals and she keeps a good balance between the popular dining aspect and the traditional public bar. The high-ceilinged wood panelled lounge on the right, with plush banquettes, a coal-effect gas stove and a big bay window, opens on the left into a smarter but relaxed area with solidly comfortable furnishings. The long brightly decorated back bar has a TV, darts and that rarity these days, a free play pool table. Adnams Bitter, Fullers London Pride, Old Speckled Hen and a guest such as Hardy’s & Hanson’s Ye Olde Trip are well kept on hand pump. They’ve a splendid range of malt whiskies and a cosmopolitan list of wines served in generous measures, and a selection of hot beverages.
The lunch bar menu includes sandwiches, filled baguettes, faggots with spring onion mash and mushy peas, sausage, egg and chips, and a variety of home cooked specials, including roasted pork hock with homemade mustard sauce. The evening menu typically features beef and real ale shortcrust pie, Arbroath smokie fishcakes, a generous bowl of chicken and bacon Caesar salad, pancakes filled with spinach and feta and steaks (up to 16oz). A childrens menu is always available with pick and mix options. Food feature nights include Monday’s Pie & Pint Night and Thursday’s Burger Night, a different dimension to the full menu which is also available.

Had a fantastic meal out with family, I grew near this pup and still remember going round the back for a secret serving of chips after playing football all night. First time back in 30 years and what a transformation. Nice big room out the back with nice fires and cosy seating. The food was spot on, it had a mixture of English dishes with a slight Indian take on them. The staff were very friendly and we shall definitely be going back way more.
Food was pretty good, although pricey for what they serve. Service wasn’t the best which is disappointing because I want them to do well. Long wait between starter and main, such a long wait after giving us the dessert menu that we just didn’t bother. Bill wasn’t correct to start with. The staff didn’t know what the soup of the day was and couldn’t remember the beer we wanted. Good food, service needs work. Hope it improves as it’s lovely to have somewhere a bit creative close by.
Christmas Day fiasco! Apologies for the long review but…. We arrived for our booking to find 4 groups of people leaving due to be told at least two hours to be seated, also 2 groups leaving having been seated and eating but not passing due to our food and service. Having nothing in the house for Christmas dinner I proceeded to negotiate to be seated and continue with our Christmas dinner. I watched ours and others food being walked across the car park in the rain to our tables no wonder the food was cold. Vegetable literally uncooked and meat over cooked and dry. There was no atmosphere, no heating and terrible service. It was very clear that they had opened purely for revenue and an opportunity to maximise profit over service. My wife wouldn’t let me walk out without paying so I coughed up just shy of £600! And I guess we mark it down to experience. 3 days later the owner calls with an apology and an offer to book for next year with 50% Off which I declined, I was then asked how can he make it better so I requested he had a think and let me know what he would refund……. Since then nothing from them. I fully appreciate things can go wrong however this is a service industry so on the day an apology, on the day an offer of discount or rebook not after he’d had a drink and plucked the courage up to open up to a shocking fiasco of a day. We eaten there before and found the food and service very good with low volume bookings but do not go on an important busy day!
We came here for a Sunday roast It was absolutely delicious!! One of the best we have had...well seasoned and plentiful, everything tasted good. The veg options were very nice. Cauliflower cheese is extra but that seems pretty standard now. Parking here is an absolute pain in the bum so be prepared to park around the corner Toilets have baby change in them The dining room is big and feels a bit sparse but great with buggy Service was great Desserts were also very nice and not badly priced
Went there with family for Sunday lunch the other weekend for a nice birthday lunch. Staff are friendly and welcoming they pass the time of day - they seem relaxed despite having all the tables full. Starters (lamb chops, calamari) were delicious with nice sauces and salad accompaniments. The Sunday roast is amazing! Between our group we had the roast beef, pork and chicken roasts... each dish was cooked brilliantly with lots of vegetables - the cauliflower cheese side is also well worth adding as well ;) We shared some deserts between us (getting rather full at this point!) and they were also well-presented. Lavazza coffee also gets my vote. Yes, it's on the more expensive side, but it lives up to it and I want to go back there when it's my birthday!
