We came for lunch - beautiful building and nice food, but the massive letdown was the service. Staff were so unwelcoming. No Hello or How are you, no one smiled, and when going to the toilet, they stared at you like you were an uninvited guest at a party. They gave us the bill before we had eaten anything and played Disney music, which was a bit werid considering the older demographic and christmas decorations. This could be a really lovely place but seriously need to improve in some areas.
Great hotel, recently refurbished and I wish them well for the future. Staff all very helpful and attentive; couldn't fault them, to be honest. There was more than one occasion during our five-day stay when they went significantly out of their way to help us. Another time, the kitchen were more than happy to provide a main meal that was totally different to anything on their (admittedly slightly limited) evening menu. Only downside was the plumbing. It's pretty noisy at times and the shower in our room kept failing - starting well but then running down to the feeblest of dribbles after about 5 minutes. Still, the bath then filled up very quickly so it wasn't the end of the world. Very comfortable, stylish and rather quirky with the most superb breakfast menu I have ever seen.
Stayed one night on route to Scotland. Stairs and hallway were somewhat worn, but the room and bathroom were smart and recently decorated and I had a good night's rest. Good breakfast provided in the morning. Once I realised it was on the main street, I managed to park right outside, but had to move the car by 9am due to parking restrictions.
Visited the George hotel for a drink while on a trip to the Lakes. I haven't rated the rooms because I never stayed. This hotel is full of character, and the fact that it's been there for over 400 year is amazing. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly and the service was great. We were looking for lunch unfortunately when we got there they had stopped serving (2-5) which is a shame because the menu looked nice but this just means we will have to visit again. 👌👌👌
Really liked room despite the stairs, food was very good, however on the Second night there was a 21st birthday party and it was quite loud in the room. Service was generally very good as well, most of the staff seemed to go that extra mile, however on the one occasion we asked someone to get us a drink from the bar, we were told that she didn't work the bar, I had only asked because previously we had been asked by other staff if would like something however I had been happy enough to go through myself. Location could not have been any better.
