A traditional English country pub nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Downe, near Bromley
We take pride our carefully selected choice of real ales and homemade seasonal food. We strive to keep the values of country pub alive by offering a homely and relaxing atmosphere and quality food and drink to accompany.
Downe Village is famous for being the home to the English Naturalist Charles Darwin and his family. Downe House, now a museum, was where Darwin worked on his theories of evolution by natural selection, which he had conceived in London before moving to Downe. He loved living in the village, visiting the local pubs, shops and going on his many walks with nature. Come and take a look to find out why.
We arrived to the pub and was greeted with a very rude lady. There is just no need for it. Don't waste your time going there
Our last walk of the year on the 30th Dec 2023, resulted in us having a small refreshment stop here. We were warmly welcomed, upon entering this gem of a traditional pub. The menu looked to be a great choice of the usual pub food. I'll note here that there's a large selection of pies. Which included their Festive December Pie. We weren't hungry on this occasion so chose their basket food, which was reasonably priced and arrived quickly. The rest room facilities were clean and tidy, and I'll note the men's was larger than most for this area. A queue for these would be a rare thing I'd say. In summary a cosy atmosphere, and warm unlike many pubs I've visited recently. I am looking forward to another walk in this area, so I can try out the pies of The George and Dragon.
We went for Sunday lunch after a dog walk. We used to come to the pub quite regularly as a family, but have not been for a few years. It was just as lovely as we remembered. Three of us had the steak and kidney pie. They were absolutely fantastic. Perfect filing, perfect pastry. We also had the roast chicken and the scampi which were also great. Great service when we were booking and when we arrived!! Very comfortable atmosphere and the dog was welcome. We will be back very soon for the Christmas Pie.
Nice cosy place next to the Christmas Tree Farm. The food was okay and the place is suitable for babies and kids.
Bar is very welcoming and ‘cosy’. Food is excellent, famous for their unique homemade pies. I had the Game pie, very filling and had a full tasty experience. Chicken and leek was much ‘lighter’, again an excellent choice. Service is very good and professional. Good selection of beers. Certainly worth visiting. Darwin’s birthplace. Parking can be tricky at times. Best book in advance. Highly recommended.
