About us

Hassocks is a portion of the old parishes of Keymer and Clayton surrounding Hassocks railway station. Were it not for the railways, Hassocks might not exist. The Friar's Oak lay originally in the parish of Clayton. The original inn may well have opened to serve the thirsty railway construction workers.

A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

A party of 6 - pre dinner drinks followed by mains and desserts. A lovely welcome when we arrived- table set up nicely and polite and courteous waiting staff. Food served hot and on hot plates in a timely manner- excellent food- steaks in particular cooked spot on.

My friend & I came here to celebrate my birthday on 5th December. Adele greeted us & made us feel welcome. Our sever was a delightful young man called Ollie. He was really helpful, officiant & friendly. The chefs cooked up a really tasty meal & and the presentation was fabulous. The ambience was truly warm, the open, roaring fire, beautiful deco completed this excellent evening. If you haven't been since the new managers have taken over, do give it a try. Thank you, Friars Oak. I will definitely be back for more soon & spreading the word. Happy Christmas 🎄

Lovely country pub with ample parking. We were welcomed at the door and shown to our table by our attentive and friendly waitress. We went for Sunday lunch and they have a special Sunday menu, starting with brunch in the mornings. We both chose the succulent, slightly rare roast lamb which came with a yorkshire pud, roast potatoes, carrots, green beans, sprouts, parsnip and lashings of gravy. We ended with a small dessert and coffee combination. This was a first experience for me and I thought that although busy, the service was good and the food delicious. Hope to visit again soon.

Came with our daughter and son in law and baby granddaughter. Very helpful and accommodating from the start when we asked for a quiet table as the baby was asleep. Anita, our waitress was only too happy to sort this out. She was polite helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The pub/ restaurant is really well laid out, and decor is lovely. The food was excellent. Lovely presentation and super tasty. Menu is lovely..something for everyone's taste and gorgeous puds. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality of food served. Would highly recommend it, and we are even booking our granddaughters 1st birthday here as they have a conservatory area to hire out with buffet option.
