About us

Just a few hundred yards away from the River Rouch you’ll find the Plough and Sail owned by the Oliver Family. Still run as a traditional pub with real log fires, fine ales, home cooked food and a very warm welcome. The Plough and Sail has history dating back over 300 years.

It is said that Paglesham was known to be the smuggling capital of the district where many locals were ship owners using the port to transport goods such as tea, gin and tobacco from Dunkirk, providing a healthy profit. The coast between Southend and Rochford was ideal smuggling country, with its creeks and rivulets turning to mud flats at low tide.

Over 30 oyster smacks were based in Paghesham and the Plough and Sail became a meeting place for the hardworking crews.

Today, The Plough and Sail still provides a meeting place for the local community and those visiting to enjoy the natural beauty of the Essex countryside.

50th birthday meal with some surprise family guests. I had a fabulous time. The food was amazing for all, and the service was spot on. Haven't visited for over 15 years and still can't fault a thing. Will return but alot sooner next time I promise 🙏

Traditional country pub with great food and ales, and lovely staff who always have a smile and some banter. I've also arrived previously by kayak via Pagelsham Creek, and the staff have not batted an eyelid with the wetsuit and paddle I turned up with.

Eaten here countless times and it’s always fantastic. Staff are all lovely. Food is incredible and cooked with care! The ribs, steak, roast dinners, Halloumi, tiger prawns, steak and Stilton pie, sweet potato burger, lamb, all fantastic! I’ve tried more from here but I can’t remember it all! The location is excellent too, and it’s not priced badly. Thanks very much

I used to come here as a child and loved watching the caged birds, which forty-five years later, are still here. This is a lovely venue for lunch or dinner, especially a celebratory one. I would imagine it to be quite cosy in winter. I enjoyed the cottage pie and apple crumble, followed by a relaxing drink and coffee in the gardens. Staff were polite and efficient and food was served in an atmosphere that facilitated conversations with diners on adjoining tables. This is a beautiful venue with quality food and drink to which I hope to return next time that I am in the area. Places like these are the perfect ambassadors for our country - one glance at my photos and you will be sold.
