About us

WELCOME TO THE ANCHOR

With its stunning waterfront location overlooking the River Crouch, The Anchor offers the perfect tranquil destination to unwind and relax with friends and family. Set in Hullbridge, deep in the heart of the charming Essex countryside, surrounded by acres of green belt farmland and a nature reserve, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the river and undulating hills. A lovely garden and large decked terraces offer plenty of space for eating outside. Our dedicated canopy in the garden provides the perfect place to shelter from the elements whilst catching up with friends outside taking in the views of the river.

If you prefer to be inside, the Orangery, with its floor to ceiling glass windows and an abundance of natural light, is the perfect alternative. The Anchor is a unique riverside retreat and the perfect destination to dine in style or simply to just watch the world go by, whilst enjoying one of our local ales or fine wines, after a stroll along the river bank.

Fondly nicknamed locally as the Essex Riviera, the River Crouch is renowned as being a premier sailing centre for the South East and is hugely popular with the local boating fraternity with three yacht clubs close by.

The river is also a natural habitat for much of the local wildlife and birds, particularly its main flock of geese that have taken up permanent residency here. It is widely believed that the name of the village derives from a Roman bridge that once crossed over the River Crouch joining Hullbridge and South Woodham Ferrers, but it was unfortunately burnt down in the 16th century during a battle between the King and the Duke of Essex. Steeped in a rich history, the wharfs of Hullbridge once played a vital role in the distribution of various commodities, including coal and shale. Prehistoric relics, such as Mesolithic flint axes, have been found in the parish.

Lovely restaurant and Ella the waitress was lovely. We all had the roasts and it was the nicest i’ve had in a while from a pub. We booked the igloos and had an amazing experience.

Sorry but this isn't a gastropub. The food was pretty dire. french onion soup was hot on one side of the bowl and luke warm in the other. Porchetta looked amazing, but on moving the meat, the carrots were cremated. No chef should send out black vegetables. The waitress asked me to wait while she replaced it. 16 minutes later, the section waitress asked what was wrong with the food. She then went to replace it. Then the gentleman I assumed was the manager came over and told me there had been a misunderstanding and they thought I was eating it and were bringing me replacement carrots? 26 minutes to cook replacement carrots? Left me feeling the whole experience was my error, not theirs. The chicken (pollo picanti) was unrecognisable. It looked more like a bad Nandos. Very low quality chicken and again massively over cooked. The waiting staff were stretched. 45 minutes for the starter to arrive & then 40 minutes for the main. I am very disappointed and can not recommend it.

First time there on recommendation of colleague at work. Not disappointed. Nice Modern Gastropub with a view of the river. Would be lovely to sit outside on a summer's day. Welcoming and attentive staff. We had the shared antipasti which was nice, maybe roccotta cheese might be too much. I have the Sumac Lamb Shank with was nice but slightly over done outside. My wife has the Buttered Cod which was tasty , tad too much chorizo. Good size portion . Price point a bit expensive overall. But a pleasant experience overall

Visited on a Saturday night. Had booked a table and was given a lovely one overlooking the water. The restaurant is very nice and views even better. Great vegan options on the menu, had the beetroot burger which was ok. Also had the sticky toffee pudding which was very nice. Special mention to Laura who was really lovely and friendly. Would love to come back and try more of the vegan options!
