Best pub in Chelmsford as far as I am concerned. Why? Because it's run by people who care - they are Licensee Tenants (real Landlords) They make everyone welcome and get to know you personally. I wish all pubs could break away from the homogenised sameness of corporate chains that employ staff who are woefully inadequate to manage public houses. If you yearn for a pub that has all the best qualities of establishments pre-new-millennium, then visit the Black Horse x
Great pub, great staff and a friendly atmosphere
Beware: the landlord is horrendous here. We walked in with the intention of staying for hours and playing pool. The landlord made us feel so uncomfortable, we didn’t stay in the pub for more than about 2 minutes. Didn’t buy a drink just left. He was so rude, and utterly miserable. And then had the cheek to call me rude, because I said we were leaving. Misery resonates in this pub. So many other brilliant ones in Chelmsford. In fact, this is the only bad pub in the whole of Chelmsford. All because of a landlord. If you’re not a people person when you’re behind the bar, what is the actual point???What a shame.
Thank you for making our first afternoon out in almost a year, a pleasant experience. Good clean pint, so full marks for cellar management. Friendly and attentive owners and staff, in a proper grown up yob free environment.
Do NOT recommend!! I found the landlord to be very rude and definitely not a very nice person. I had the misfortune of having to deal with the landlords unfriendly nature. I complained to him about lipstick, which most definitely wasn’t my colour, on the glass. He accused me of lying and said that I just wanted another drink. I just wanted a clean glass for my drink. But that was too much trouble for him. Instead of changing the glass to a clean one like anyone else would do, the landlord made a scene accusing me of being a freeloader. He embarrassed me so I left and had a great night in the pub next door.
