About us

It started life as three Tudor cottages and first became licensed premises in the 18th century. Herongate is an attractive Essex village in a proposed conservation area, once part of the Heron Hall Estate owned by one of the county's most influential and ancient families, the Tyrells. Only the moat survives from the grand Tyrell manor house today, but The Boar's Head pub sign still retains the Tyrell crest, a boar's head holding a peacock's feather in its mouth. The family boasted many noted parliamentarians and close servants to the Crown in the 14th and 15th centuries, and Heron Hall must once have been a substantial home, a brick-built castle with round towers, demolished in 1788. An historic small inn with many well-preserved original features, The Boar's Head serves delicious pub food from an extensive menu and an ever-changing specials board, available all day. Sunday lunch is especially popular, served with a huge Yorkshire pudding and unlimited gravy. The Boar’s Head country pub originally comprised three Tudor cottages, forming a group with other buildings around the village pond. Part of the Tyrell family’s Heron Hall estate, it first became a licensed inn in the 18th century serving the small village community. Now a Grade II listed building, this attractive historic pub reflects the essential character of the village itself, surrounded by many attractive 17th and 18th century cottages clustered round the pond and Button Common. Herongate and nearby Ingrave are mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Just had lunch with my wife there, good selection of food and very well cooked and presented. Natashia our waitress could not have been more helpful. Will definitely be going back.

We had a great afternoon at the Boars Head, Herongate. Staff were very friendly & the food was delicious. We arrived 20 minutes before our reservation time and our table was ready. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

A Saturday pub lunch, last Saturday, for early celebration of one of my sister's birthday. I telephoned ahead to check for reserving a table, though, I don't go much on their automated bot system (I asked to, "speak to a person", and got through to a human being), only to check about their offerings for Gluten Free (GF), as this was not very clear on their website. But the lady I spoke to was very helpful and put me at ease with my GF requirements. Then asked if I would like to book a table, which I did and she was able to fit us in. The ambience inside the pub and restaurant, was wonderful, welcoming and friendly. We got there at a good time, as it was not busy when we sat down, but started getting busier, when we were eating. The waitress was helpful, friendly and chatty and the food was cooked and served up quite quickly - well, it was for us. The food photo uploaded was on my sister's meal. The photo of my GF burger, with a beautiful side salad, came out blurry and I couldn't wait to start eating. Well, as a Coeliac, I was apprehensive, but, their GF burger in a toasted bun, with an additional side salad, was gorgeous. Myself and sisters would have no hesitation in booking another table and meal, in the near future.

We had breakfast here last weekend and it was fantastic. Great service and the menu had a good range of options to suit all appetites/tastes. There was a good kids menu too with plenty of choice to keep them happy! We often go out for breakfast at the weekend and this place is definitely going to be added to the list. Unfortunately it was really empty so I hope more people realise they serve breakfast here as it’s definitely worth a visit!

Lovely little country pub in a beautiful location with friendly staff. We were a table of 5, all had starters, main course & desert. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We had salt & chilli Squid, creamy garlic mushrooms on ciapatta & giant prawns & arancini from the specials for starters. Then the signature burger, sirloin steak, basa fillet & scallops on pea risotto & seafood grill from the specials for mains. Lastly brownie, apple tart & coconut icecream, cheesecake & trio of icecream with sauce for desert. We all cleared our plates & couldn't fault a thing. Even if you don't have a meal it's still lovely to just sit outside by the very picturesque pond & have a drink in the summer along with the ducks that waddle about! Will definitely be back, thank you.
