About us

The Elephant’s Nest Inn is a quintessentially English – and Devonshire – country pub set in a peaceful location within the Dartmoor National Park. It is a place to meet, whether for a drink or to eat, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. There are open log fires, thick stone walls and slate floors inside, and outside there is a large and recently extended garden which provides marvellous views of the moor.

Being located in as remote a place as it is, great emphasis is placed on good food, although the pretentious ‘gastro pub’ description will not be heard here!

An extension to the pub has recently been completed to provide three en-suite double/ twin bedrooms in order to offer a bed and breakfast facility.

The Elephant’s Nest Inn is one of only three pubs in Devon to feature in every edition of The Good Pub Guide since it began publication 25 years ago.

Open every day from 12 noon to 3pm and 6.30pm to 11.00pm (10.30pm on Sundays). Last orders for food are 2.15pm and 9.00pm.

Children are welcome in two of the dining areas and the garden; those under 14 are not normally permitted in the bar.

Lunches and dinners are served every day and on Sundays two roasts are always available.

Friendly dogs are very welcome.

THIS IS THE PLACE!!! My son and I have visited Devon every year for the last 6 years and we always stay at The Elephants Nest. The place is wonderful, charming, cozy, welcoming and such a great place to stay. Hugh and his wife Denise are so very kind and accommodating, you could not ask for better hosts. The food is to die for, Denise could be head chef in any Michelin starred kitchen. What she serves is amazing. We eat breakfast and dinner at the Elephants Nest every day, there is no point in going anywhere else. I even asked Denise to dump Hugh and come live with me in America, she told me no, I was too old for her! We'll be back again next year, God willing! Paul Thompson

No longer a pub - booked because we wanted to stay in a pub specifically to be able to relax in the bar, have a pint of Jail Ale etc... website I booked on was not clear that this is no longer open as a pub. Menu is now very limited and no good for vegetarians (who still fries their cheaps in beef for goodness sake!) and now trying to charge me to cancel the booking. Not a good experience.

Visited the gardens on the St Lukes Hospice open gardens day. The gardens are fabulous and if it wasn't for living in the area I would definitely be booking to stay.

We have just returned from a long weekend away at The Elephant Inn. Unfortunately it is not operating as a pub at the moment but that only enhanced the experience as we had the use of the wonderful gardens and the magnificent views from it. The breakfasts that we had were absolutely magnificent and I could not remember ever having such fine food. We did not eat there in the evening which was unfortunate as another guest, who was staying in one of the other rooms, mentioned to us just how good it was. The room we had was the ground floor one which had the patio. It was big, clean and tidy as well as having everything else you require. Having read earlier reviews some of which mentioned a “ Grump Landlord “ I was apprehensive. I needn’t have been as I found both of the owners very approachable and very helpful. I would certainly recommend a stay and we are already trying to organise another visit

2 family's met on a glorious summer's day for lunch before setting off for a walk. The food was good, the service excellent, the venue superb. We are outside in the lovely garden so I can't really comment on the inside of the pub, the bar area seemed pleasant and quite traditional.
