Fantastic venue hire for sons 18th

— Fantastic venue to hire. Hired for my son's 18th. After ringing village halls etc was amazed at the value. All staff were brilliant. Bar staff and door staff were included in the price. The best bit was no cleaning up after a load of 18 year old at the end of the night

Appalling service, “Fawlty Towers” of pub food

— We booked a table for four and when we arrived were pointed to a table for two that had been laid for four. We asked for another table that was big enough for four and had been laid for two, but were told that table had been specifically requested. Oh well. When asked if we would like a drink to take to the table, we opted for a bottle of wine. Five minutes later I had to go and ask the waitress for a wine list. Ten minutes after that, she came to take our wine order and so we ordered our food as well - it was clear she was having difficulty coping. We had a starter to share and this arrived promptly, was delicious and we were kindly offered extra bread as we where sharing. It then took almost an hour for our main courses to arrive. During this time, the couple who were given the larger table to themselves received drinks, starters and mains. We twice asked if the wait would be much longer and were told the first time that it would be ten minutes, by a very sulky and sullen waitress whose attitude was abysmal; she offered more drinks whilst we were waiting and when asked if this was complementary because of the wait simply replied that she could only give one glass of wine! When asking the second time (after twenty minutes) we were given a similarly appalling response by the waiter. Our requests were very polite - the reaction would have been comedic had it not been so rude. Our main courses arrived. The Coq au Vin was acceptable, if very salty, with raw beans. Al dente they were not. The loin of cod with crab ravioli was very nice. However, the two steaks were like old leather. How the medium rare steak had been cooked is a mystery - it was dry, hard, pink even on the surface, chewy and inedible. The medium was well done on the inside, cremated on the outside and had the consistency of a tyre. One was returned - we declined a replacement meal as we were now nearly two hours into our visit. The other we just left as no one came to see if everything was ok, and it was another 30 minutes before either member of staff returned. We had clearly been labelled as troublemakers... The waiter came to take the plates eventually and asked if “everything was fine”. I told him that we declined to pay for the second steak. He barely suppressed a laugh and told me that “they could not be blamed for the quality of the meat, that is our butcher’s fault”. What a valuable member of staff. Another fifteen minutes passed before anyone returned to see if we wanted dessert and you can guess we gave up. I asked to speak to the person in charge and was told that he would not be available. Clearly the owner of the place simply does not care. It was not just we who were appalled - other diners were clearly dissatisfied. Apart from the “preferred couple”. For the future of this place, I hope they eat there a lot. Don’t go - not worth the petrol, time or effort.
