About us

The public house became The Crowborough Cross in the 1950s. It had long been the Red Cross. The old coaching inn was one of several mentioned in the will of the brewery owner William Verrall, dated 1836. Verrall had acquired the Red Cross from George Baker Camfield in 1827. The company (JD Wetherspoon) has spent £2 million redeveloping and extending the Grade II listed building at the busy crossroads, in the middle of Crowborough. The two storey property, with an attic, two dormers and a tiled roof, is described in the listing text as ‘late 18th or early 19th century’. Historical photos, details of local history, information relating to events, historical buildings and characters of the area, as well as artwork by local artists including a wooden sculpture of the ‘Ashdown Horse’, are all displayed in the pub.

We visited after walking in the nearby Ashdown Forest. This was conveniently placed on the route home, so decided to pop in. Be mindful that there is no parking, you will have to find some then walk up. The place itself is quite large, clean spacious and not busy at the time we visited (just after lunch) I had visited over 20 years ago, and it is very different from then, but in a good way. There were plenty of seating areas available, booth, bar, sitting or bar stool and table. The tables were all clean, with available menus to look at. We opted to order via the app (recommended) and waited around a few minutes for our drinks, and 10 for the food. I opted for Katsu Curry, which was delicious, and my oppo had chicken tenders and chips, he was more than happy. Overall, a very pleasant experience, good food, clean, friendly staff, what more could you ask for?

The staff are absolutely lovely and hardworking. The food is decent but don't expect nothing fancy for few quids.

A smashing setting for Wetherspoons, a great pub in a lovely environment. All the usual specials and great deals with unusually excellent service. I love the menu days such as Curry Thursday, where you can get a drink and a very passable Katsu curry for less than eight pounds. You can't beat it!

12/08/23 went in with my wife and our dog to get a coffee (largely to escape a shower). After I had paid, the barman put two empty coffee mugs on the bar and left me to it. After a while I asked him when the contents might be arriving. I was told that there were a couple of coffee machines I could use. Nice to be told (eventually) The first machine was faulty but the second worked fine. The as I sat down a member of staff approached us and informed us that no dogs were allowed in the building so we left, leaving our hard won coffee behind. In future I’ll just stay out in the rain
