About us

The Eagle and Child Inn is situated on the edge of the quiet Lake District village of Staveley.

We are a Lake District pub with accommodation, ideally placed for exploring the rest of the Lakes. We are only a few minutes away from the beautiful Kentmere valley and the bustling towns of Windermere and Kendal.

Great Pub, Great Food, Great Friends and a Great Beer Garden too!

Staveley itself has much to offer – excellent walking, fishing, cycling, and a vibrant array of local businesses including Hawkshead Brewery & Wheelbase – plenty to offer!

We are a pub that offers top quality accommodation and are particularly proud of the excellent food we serve from our interesting and varied menu. We have a great selection of hand-pulled local ales and feature regular guest beers.

We stopped here on our way home from a weekend walking in the lakes and it was just a short detour from the main route. The setting is beautiful and there seemed to be plenty of parking on the roads as well as in designated spaces directly opposite. The pub itself is lovely, warm and welcoming, with lots of interesting historical and quirky artefacts on furniture and hanging from the ceiling. There was a lovely open fire roaring in the fireplace. The staff were very friendly, the bar had a range of good ales on offer and there was a friendly atmosphere. My friends chose the lamb stew which they were happy with. I had the sirloin steak, which was well done, although I had ordered it cooked medium & the chips were overdone. The dinner was tasty though and I cleared the plate (as usual 😁). I would go back and give them another try the next time I'm in the area.

This is an excellent pub and hotel. Been a couple of times but first visit with Boothroyd. The only downside is the lovely food is served 12 - 2 and then from 5.30..so having once arrived at 2.15 very hungry I had to fill up on scoobie snacks. Only drinking today. Lovely setting. Great rear beer garden. Super real ale selection from 4 handpumps. Booth had his first ever beer from Eden River brewery. A session blond, Fuggles. Four real ales on my visit. Roaring real fire,

Stayed in Staveley for a week over new year and frequented the Eagle and Child a few times. Great atmosphere; a proper pub with a cosy fire place and dog friendly too. Ate here twice, the food was brilliant….the Moroccan lamb being my favourite thing I ate all week. The only thing I would criticise is the chips; they focus on good local ingredients and go a good job of it, but the cheap oven chips are a huge let down (anaemic and hard even though redone a few times), get some proper chips on and next time I may increase this to 5star. Would visit again though, good pub!

This has for a long time been a pub I always visited everytime I was in the lakes which is very frequently. The location is excellent and both beer gardens are great places to chill. In particular the one at the front by the river. The pub itself is quirky and the selection and quality of ales is excellent. However the food has taken a nosedive. My better half had mackerel pate with toasted artisan sour dough bread which was stone cold. When she highlighted this to a waiter he said he'd look into it and we never saw him again. I had the steak and ale pie with chips and mushy peas. It was awful...perhaps the worst pub meal I've had the misfortune to eat. 'Steak was tough as boots, short crust pastry was soggy and I didn't detect a hint of ale. Chips were undercooked and mushy peas were tasteless. I have no inclination to eat here again but I'll have a beer in the beer gardens. They really need to pull their socks up regarding food.
