About us

We took over the tenancy of the pub on March 31st 2023, we are looking to take the pub forward with home cooked traditional food. We also have had a new kitchen fitted and a new menu and have a food standards rating of 5 we are doing traditional Sunday lunches and desserts with a good selection of food and sandwiches available in the week.

We are hoping to make it a welcoming atmosphere to all.

We are showing Sky and BT sports entertainment and we also have live music once a fortnight weather permitting, we also have traditional pub games darts dominoes and quizzes,

We are dog friendly.

The garden to the front is an enclosed beer garden and has a slide and a red tractor for the children to play on.

The Duke of Wellington is traditional stone built double fronted pub steeped in history, it is situated in the Welsh village of Acrefair which lies in the scenic vale of Llangollen and makes up part of the bustling county of Wrexham. The pub is just off the A539 which is the busy road connecting Wrexham with Llangollen. Acrefair is a village in Wrexham County Borough, north-east Wales, in the community of Cefn. It was formerly part of the ancient parish of Ruabon, and is located between Wrexham and Llangollen. It is close to the villages of Trevor, Cefn Mawr, Ruabon and Plas Madoc. The name Acrefair originates from the Welsh word for acres—acrau, or acre in the local Welsh dialect—and Mair, the Welsh name for Mary. The English meaning of Acrefair is Mary's Acres. The pub benefits from being just a stone’s throw from the Pontcysylte aqueduct which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Pub Layout

As expected from the nature of this periodic pub the inside has a traditional and welcoming feel. The bar has a good range of products including cask ales which are very popular with the locals. There is scope to develop the product range in line with current market trends including developing a more vibrant spirit range. The front of the pub has two snug rooms which collectively seat around 40 diners/ drinkers, the cosy log fire is a welcome

addition to the character of this pub. The fixtures and fittings are an eclectic mix of both loose and fixed and are in keeping with the current style of the pub. Towards the rear of the pub is the ladies toilets which lead onto a paved patio area which has a small, covered smoking solution with seating, this area also has an outbuilding where in keeping with the tradition of the building, houses the gents’ toilets.

There is a side secondary beer garden. At the front of the pub there is parking for cars and camper vans, although given its location most locals enjoy a leisurely walk to and from the pub. The front beer garden is a real asset able to seat up to 140 guests, this grassed area could easily be transformed for events and is a real sun trap during those summer months.

A great place. The only things on the menu are things that they can cook for you! The food was good at really low prices and the beer was excellent. This is what I want to see in a pub rather than a menu as long as your arm with everything precooked and 'pinged'. So much better than other local offerings.

We have stopped at this pub a few times in the past but had not visited for a while (only because we have not been in the area) On our way to Wales so knew it was a good place to stop for lunch. Always had good food, everyone is very friendly and we will be stopping there again on our way back home

This pub is fantastic. We had Steak and Ale pie and three curry, chips and Naan. The pie pastry was delicious and was full of steak. The curry was absolutely delicious too lovely and creamy. Then we went for puddings. The Jam Sponge and custard was light and fluffy and the apple crumble and custard was delicious. If you want good home cooking at a very reasonable price, this is the place to go. Without hesitation, we would highly recommend The Duke of Wellington in Acrefair and you won’t be disappointed.

Really welcoming local pub, beer garden, friendly landlady. Amazing, value for money home cooked food. Ham and eggs possibly the nicest ham I have ever eaten. Spent the weekend in the area and it was the best food we ate, beating a £20 steak at a gastropub and a terrible sunday lunch in Llangollen. Will definitely visit again if in the area.
