Loved it, not been there for at least 15 years and it's evolved a bit, but it has not lost its charm! We're plant-based and I don't think I'm doing the DoC a disservice when I say that plant-based options are almost non-existant. We knew the menu so we were not surprised, and yet, we managed to have some lovely food and drink and left the place very satisfied. The other meals that came out looked fantastic. The garden managed to still look lovely even in the wind and rain! (pictured, but not the best)
Just going by the exterior look of a pub then this one is picture perfect. The grounds are a delight to walk around, with so many things to take in as you meander through winding pathways, passing fish and a very enticing outside fireplace. And with the sound of a stream trickling it's way through the grounds just adds a touch of zen like tranquility to this charmingly old traditional English pub. The staff are super welcoming and the bar is quirky and small which only encourages you to speak with fellow drinkers that have probably been coming here for many a year....and it's easy to understand why. You can also eat here, and by all accounts the Sunday roast is a must. But you do need to book a few weeks in advance, which says it all. There is a great choice of real ales, craft beers, spirits and cocktails on offer, even a festive cup of mulled wine or cider if you really want to get into the Christmas spirit.
My absolute go to if we have friends down the ROASTS are particularly my favourite because you carve your own meat. This is a really nice touch. We they have a great wine selection too , lovely fires and feel cosy but nice atmosphere. The food in general is exceptional and the chef even comes out to0 , a very friendly place ! Bonus you can take dogs in the bar area. We have already pre-booked for new year and can't wait to eat again with you!
Such a shame as i had been looking forward to my birthday meal here for many weeks, visited The Duke of Cumberland Arms back in 2012 and had memorable and delicious meal, however tonight's meal was incredibly disappointing. I wish i had the balls to give honest feedback at the table, as i had told my partner the fillet steak was the worst steak i had ever eaten in my life, however when the sweet waitress came and asked how our meals were i immediately lied and said it was lovely. Although it wasn't all awful, the starter was delicious and the staff were kind and efficient, but i am not even sure the beef fillet was even beef fillet because it was so tough and chewy. I stupidly ate the entire steak and left no room for pudding which i observed on the other tables looking delicious.
We just celebrated a birthday at the Duke. The Sunday Roast is magnificent. We were eight so had a large joint of perfectly cooked rib of beef and a whole chicken. The joint comes on a large plater and one carves the meat yourself which was fun. Perfect roast potatoes, cauliflower and greens accompanying the wonderful meal, large Yorkshire puddings lashings of lovely gravy followed.. Excellent English sparkling wine and a superb red finishing the repast. Great service with a smile This is a wonderful old Pub Restaurant with fantastic food and service Beautiful setting Great staff and Simon is a world class chef
