The Tolpuddle Martyrs formed the first trade unions in 1834, and since that date, the village of tolpuddle has hosted the UK's largest trade union festival each July.
In 1833, a group of six farm workers from the Dorset village of Tolpuddle were concerned that their wages had been reduced, so they formed a trade union to ask for guarantees that their wages wouldn’t be cut any further. Other farm workers wanted to join their trade union, and prospective members were asked to swear an oath and pay a fee to join.
Little gem of a pub nestled in the middle of Tolpuddle village. There was a nice lunch menu and reasonably priced too. The food was homemade and very tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful and the pub had a lovely cosy feel. Really lovely!
So amazing to see this pub back open in 2023. Bought, refurbished and developed by volunteers in the local community! True Community Spirit! The landlord provides a real warm friendly welcome and the staff are 5 star. Service can't be underestimated and the Martyrs In ensures is service is high! The chef does wonders with every dish, every time! It's a weekly visit for us!
Stopped on the off chance for a drink and some lunch. Found the pub to be extremely comfortable, friendly and welcoming, even to my lively Dalmatian! The food on offer gave a good choice at reasonable cost and was delicious. We will go back, soon for sure!
Great pub for food and drink. Friendly staff and good value for money. Limited car parking so you may have to park on- street.
Great to see the pub open! Have been a couple of times since it reopened. Last night I went for food with my son and everyone (landlord, barman, chef) was so friendly and accommodating. Honestly the best Steak & Ale pie i've had in forever. Their pizzas are amazing too!
