Having won fans aplenty with The Vanilla Pod (first in Torquay, then at The Cridford Inn in Trusham, in the Teign valley), Ian and Tracey Nixon opened The Phoenix in February 2014 on the site of the former Old Coaching House on Chudleigh’s Fore Street, which had succumbed to fire in 2011.
The dining room and bar share a big, open space that has a warm atmosphere. There’s a happy mix of generations in evidence, something that Ian is keen to encourage. “I develop my menus to suit all taste buds, so there’s a lot of variation.” he says. “I’ve also catered for a younger audience, so that they are able to come out and eat with their parents and it won’t break the bank.”
With a commitment to sourcing local ingredients, plus special offer meal deals spread across the week – children under three eat free! – the Phoenix ticks boxes across the board.

Great evening out again at the Phoenix. This time we had the 3 course Christmas menu and every dish that came out was perfect. The 4 of us all had different choices and you could tell the food was good as everyone was like mmmmmmm. Service was excellent and we didn't wait long at all for the meal. Would highly recommend
We've eaten at the Phoenix many times and our latest visit was definitely no disappointment. As a party of 4 we ordered from both the Christmas menu and the pub menu. The food was excellent, the atmosphere very enjoyable and service very prompt. We will be going yet again very soon.
Sunday - roast beef & veg, absolutely gorgeous, followed by rhubarb cheesecake. Great food, great staff, good value for money. And dog friendly too. We will definitely be back
Mixed feelings at the table. Scallops were great as starter. Misto Fristo not that good. Mussels were nice. Filled blaice was ok.. dont be in a rush, kitchen needs their time. Waitresses informed us in advance. So it wasn't a surprise
Had a really good meal with family to mark a Diamond Wedding anniversary. It was special and all the staff at the Phoenix at Chudleigh helped to make it a special celebration. Returned recently for a meal with my partner & the quality of the food did not disappoint. A really wonderful steak served just as I like was really really good. Back in Chudleigh for a few days so enjoying the really good food on offer at the Phoenix. 👍👍👍
