Champions of analogue, real beer, excellent wines and good food in a relaxed, affable* atmosphere since 1848. * Also with plenty of dark corners suitable for trysts and plotting.
We love real beer. We have strong links with local breweries.
Regional beers are well represented, with a few old favourites from further afield thrown in.
Our ale selection varies from week to week and sometimes even from day to day.
We are assiduous in our care and keeping of the cellar. Much like the heir to the throne and his plants, the landlord can occasionally be found talking to his barrels.
The Hourglass is one of only four Exeter pubs acknowledged in the 2013 Good Beer Guide (the others all being free houses; this one, alas, is not).
Our beer suppliers include the following breweries, among many others…
Exeter Brewery, Bath Ales, Adnams, Exe Valley, Moor, Dorset Brewing Co., Hop Back Brewery, Teignworthy, Hunter’s, Timothy Taylor, Skinners, Otter, RCH, Town Mill Brewery, Exmoor, Woodfordes, Dartmoor, Hook Norton, Stonehenge, Yeovil.
We serve four-pint jugs straight from the barrel at reduced prices.
We are proud to sell Burrow Hill cider.
We also (reluctantly) sell lager.

Excellent venue, seating was a little cramped but with such a large party, it was inevitable. The food was delicious! Very good quality meal, the meats didn't come out at the same time as the vegetables and there was quite a wait for gravy following that. I'd definitely return as I'd like to try other foods not just the Christmas meals. Staff were friendly and accommodating and the room was very quaint.
We had a great lunch here at the beginning of December. With excellent, friendly service, we particularly liked having a smaller menu (choice of meat or veggie) with the focus being on delicious well cooked, tasty food. Highly recommended ⭐️🌟⭐️🌟⭐️
Possibly the best Sunday roast I have ever had. The beef was superb, and I can’t remember another establishment caring enough to offer organic chicken. Fantastic Exeter ale and friendly staff. Lola the cockapoo also had a fine time. Thank you!
A lovely atmospheric pub, with excellent beer from Exeter Brewery. Excellent food, we ate cod followed by Devon Dumplings that were great light and tasty. Helpful staff in a busy environment. We will return.
We sadly missed our opportunity to have lunch here. We got caught up and the kitchen closes at 2pm on a Saturday but the food does look lush!
