About us

Dating from 1799, the Malt Shovel still retains its original beams and floors which help towards making it a charming village pub. You will enjoy watching all the narrow boats and cruisers pass by, whether sat outside in summer or inside in winter by the warmth of the real fire.

More than anything we appreciate the trade from the locals and our regulars. We stage regular entertainment and varied menus on our Thursday evening dining so that the Malt Shovel can have an appeal for everyone.

You'll savour our selection of real ales, lagers, fine wines and non-alcoholic drinks as well as our teas and coffees - the perfect way to spend time with friends.

We have a wide selection of snacks and freshly made sandwiches. At lunchtimes, we offer menus that include both traditional, home-cooked meals and light snacks using freshly prepared local produce. In fact we regard the Malt Shovel as a shop window for our catering business Big On Taste and so, for example, you will only ever find fresh vegetables cooked daily on our menu.

We're rightly famed for our well kept Marstons Pedigree and our charismatic staff will all enjoy looking after you on your visit.

Karen, Colin and their team look forward to welcoming you, whether you're having a snack at lunchtime or coming in for a drink with friends in the evening!.

What a great breakfast, at the lovely 1799 pub! Great food, drink, with plenty to see and do at the Inland Port Festival! !

Good proper pub grub at good prices. The pies were great - slices of a big pie just like the old school dinners style and very tasty. Good to see a varied selection even on a Sunday. Nice place.

Absolutely wonderful pub serving a fabulous range of Beers, Spirits and Wines. Very relaxing area outside near the canal to enjoy your drinks and food, and soak up the atmosphere.

My best friend and I nipped out for some lunch and found this gem of a place - right by the canal - great viewing of boats coming and going - the greeting we got inside was genuine and friendly - the food blew us both away - my best friend had the steak pie and I had the chicken and leek one - every morsel was totally delicious - proper home cooked chips - wow and to top it all proper gravy!! It’s the best meal we have both had our in a very long time - excellent - can’t recommend it highly enough

Love this place. Nice breakfast beside the canal, then plenty to see on a local walk. Great choice of beers when you get back.
