Ready for AUTUMN arriving
At The Old Dog, we offer local, unfussy quality food, drinks and service. As an independent family business, we are proud of how our team work together to create a relaxing fun atmosphere when you visit us for all types of occasions, from a relaxing drink with friends in our courtyard to a special celebration or our popular Sunday Roast together as a family.
We are dog friendly at all times and weathers, there is no better sight than wet dogs drying out in front of our fires at this time of year. It won't be long until our large outdoor area will be in full swing as the weather warms up as everyone relaxes a well earned drink after a walk or cycle or meeting up with friends and family before enjoying our freshly prepared food.
We are currently open five days a week opening hours from Wednesday to Sunday, opening at 11:00 for morning coffees and cake then with our kitchen opening fully at 12:00. We recommend booking if looking to join us for food and can also book if you want drinks only.
Come and visit us whether you live local to us in the Ashbourne area or whilst you explore the natural beauty of Dovedale, Thorpe Cloud and the Peak District.

If you want a perfect sunday lunch this is the place to be! Highly recommend the beef and definitely need to book! Staff accommodating but some could do with being a little more attentive...not clearing plates/glasses in a timely manner, not asking if anymore food/drinks are required and slow with key items...such as serving food but not cutlery until 5 minutes after receiving the food. If these small tweaks were made it would make The Old Dog 10/10. Would not stop me returning though in the future! **Update** after several return visits the staff seemed settled and everything flowed beautifully. 5 star *****
Absolutely spot on! What a fantastic pub. Staying locally and was recommended by a friend. Did not disappoint! Gorgeous fresh Sunday lunch, the beef was lovely and they have gluten free options. It's dog friendly too! Staff were all friendly and attentive. Who ever runs this lovely pub should be extremely proud of themselves, their chefs and staff. Cracking pub 👌
I enjoyed a lovely pint of Plum Porter after a walk in the frost, across icy fields, down to Dovedale. The log fires were toasty and very welcome. The menu looked great so I will return and have a meal in the future and I'll update this review.
We had an amazing lunch at The Old Dog today. The atmosphere was great from the minute we walked in. The lovely fires were lit and the Christmas music was playing. The team were so helpful with dietary requirements. We had the Christmas Dinner and it was DELICIOUS! Gluten free beer on tap and a gorgeous crumble to finish. If you could imagine the perfect pub- This would be it!
Another great meal although this was our first Sunday lunch experience! Super fast service, easy to book a table and delicious… even for a fussy vegetarian! Great drinks selection including low and no alcohol - roaring fire and Christmas decorations are the cherry on the cake! 👍🏻
