About us

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT US
Welcome to the Davenport Arms, known locally as the Thief's Neck. There is outdoor seating to both the front and rear of the pub. The rear of the pub boasts a large area to sit and for children to play in with views of the adjacent fields, the local cricket pitch and livestock. The team also rents the rear space for those wanting small functions such as weddings, christenings and birthdays. So, whether to party or spend a relaxing afternoon with friends and children, The Davenport Arms makes the perfect venue. Historic information: One part of the famed Capesthorne Estate dates to the 18th Century, in which the Davenport family were the game wardens to the King's hunting preserves. As hereditary foresters of the King, the Davenports had the authorised power to put poachers to death without trial. Hence, the crest of the Davenport coat of arms originally was a serf's head with a rope around its neck, signifying that the Davenports had the power to hang without appeal to the King. This same crest can still be seen today from the pub's pictorial.

Always been a great pub. Good range of sensibly priced beers. Just called in for a quick drink so cannot comment on the food offerings.

Nice to see old Tom on draft and seemed well kept as usual. Friendly staff. Nice fire. Most authentic pub in Woodford with not a plastic plant in sight

Visited for Sunday afternoon lunch / dinner. It wasn’t possible to book a table so we had a bit of a wait when we arrived, which was fine - bar staff were friendly and there was a good local pub atmosphere in the bar area. We were seated in one of the two small dining areas which was cosy and comfortable enough. The choice of food on the menu was good - with a children’s menu available. The portions were all generous so in the end we were glad we didn’t opt for starters, Roast Turkey, roast beef, beef and ale pie and the kids beef burgers were all great choices. Restaurant was dog friendly (one of the main reasons we chose this pub) and food orders had to be placed at the bar. Overall a pleasant and warm atmosphere with good home cooked food.

Just popped in for a quick drink with family. This is a great little pub that has always been popular. They have a good range of beers to choose from. It’s dog friendly with a jar of feee dog biscuits as you enter. There’s plenty of free parking in the pub’s own car park.

Lovely pub with the feel of a proper country pub. Located at the very end of the 42b bus route. Think I came here about 40 years ago. I knew it was a Good Beer Guide regular; 35 years according to the A frame outside. Also known as The Thief's neck. ( Davenport family could hang poachers on behalf of the King!). An excellent Robinsons establishment. Great pint of Dizzy Blond. Pint of Madri. £10.30 for the two. Beer garden to front and rear.
