About us

Part of the esteemed Askham Collection, The Queen’s Head is a cosy 17th century village pub with bedrooms ideally located in the pretty village of Askham in the Lake District. In 2022 we became AA accredited as a 4 star gold inn and with an AA Rosette restaurant.

Lovingly renovated to the Askham Hall standard by the Lowther family, discover seasonal ‘super-posh’ pub food made with produce reared, foraged and grown on our farms, hedgerows and kitchen gardens. Think earthy truffle with creamy artichoke; deep-flavoured seasonal game and home-reared saddleback pork; hand-dived scallops and local lobster; brassicas, herby pestos, berries and orchard fruits.

Make the most of the location with an invigorating walk on the local fells, or a more gently stroll along the river Lowther right from the door, with no need to drive anywhere during your stay. Take a stroll around the gardens at Askham Hall where much of our produce is grown and reared, and even a dip in the outdoor pool in summer months.* Back at the pub enjoy a local pint by the copper topped bar before a lighter lunch or a refined yet hearty dinner. The regularly-changing menu is matched by a wonderful selection of wines courtesy of the sommeliers from our Michelin-starred sister hotel, Askham Hall, just a short walk away. Make the most of this special relationship and eat at both places during your stay…

In the kitchen is Gareth Webster, an exceptional talent who led the award-winning team at the George and Dragon, Clifton for 3 years for the Lowther family and prior to that worked with Simon Rogan.

Booking for dinner and Sunday lunch essential (although light lunch is walk-ins only), with just 9 tables and 6 bedrooms, this is ‘posh’ country pub perfection.

Came with friends and family to celebrate a special birthday. We were hoping for a memorable occasion but, whilst the food was great, the service was definitely a let down which spoilt the evening.

Lovely friendly pub. Stunning environment and welcoming. I have given a 4 star only because there is no room for customers who just want a drink. Tables were all for food only. This was on a Sunday though.

Came for a meal and wow what a meal. Food was amazing, the menu was good with a few choices. The food for me was the best I’ve had. Thank you for such a great experience. Also thank you to team who were really friendly and service was top notch.

Called in for a drink while out walking. Beautiful pub & really warm & welcoming bar with real fire, real candles & fresh flowers on the tables, all score mega brownie points with me, very civilised! Excellent range of beers & gins. Refurbished to a high standard in country style with high quality fabrics. Even the toilets were very smart and immaculate! Drinks served by a very pleasant barman. Will definitely go back, probably to stay and definitely to eat there.

A super little pub! A Sunday evening encounter for us. Booked in as we were staying at Askham Hall for a few days and this village pub is part of the Askham Collection. A lovely cosy atmosphere with a nice mix of locals and visitors. Welcoming waiting staff serving some good locally sourced food. All at a reasonable price point. PB 👍🏻
