Popular large town pub with exposed brick work and alcoves, close to the station and cattle market.
The Duke of Cumberland is the first and last pub on the North Eastern entrance\exit to and from Kendal. It sits at the junction of Shap Road and Appleby Road. This area used to be called Far Cross Bank. Shap Road was Far Cross Bank West, and Appleby Road was Far Cross Bank East. At the junction of these roads, a medieval cross once stood. When the cross itself was removed, its large granite base was left in situ, and was used as a meeting place. It's thought that such were the size of the crowds that gathered here, that the local authorities had the cross base buried, and it remains lost to this day.
My family booked a table for 18. This was to celebrate my grandsons 11th Birthday on 23 December. On arriving we were directed to an upstairs room. This was a struggle for my granddad who is 92. He had to climb the stairs. The room was absolutely freezing. We ask for the heating to be put on and was met with an attitude from a young member of staff. She replied, that she could not put it on. That's it! My granddad is 92. Again, " can't do" Nobody, attended us and we were left on our own. The same young girl came upstairs 30 minute later. Went to all the grandchildren and asked for ID on all the children. My eldest, who is 6'7" and is 23. Said, to the young girl, "do I not look older enough?" She said, you look barely out of the womb" discusting attitude. They started to bring the startes out 45minutes later. My 20 year old Grandson, started to eats his and found a snail climbing up the small pot. There was slime all over the food. Only about 4 had received their starters. We took photos and went to complain. We was met with accusations that we had planted the snail, again from the same young girl. We said, "check you cameras and surely if we had, then we would do it at the end of the night before paying. Absolutely, absurd attitude So we just left. They need to get rid of that member of staff. Will never recommend or go back
Could do with a bigger vegan menu BUT the staff were more than accommodating with our dietary requirements and very helpful and cheerful, too. All in all, lovely nosh, decent beer, lovely people, my girlfriend and I would deffo come here again.
Booked a table of 18 here for a birthday dinner and from the start didn’t feel very welcome. There was one staff member that had a terrible attitude from the start yet we continued to eat here despite that. Starters were bought out with no cutlery and ten minutes later after asking 3 different member of staff we didn’t receive any (so it all became cold including the soup) then to our surprise we found a SNAIL in one of our starters. Absolutely disgusting. We let the staff know and no one tended too it. After asking to speak to the manager one of the staff members said “well there wasn’t a snail in it when I bought it to you” suggesting we had put a snail in our starter. How odd when no one had actually eaten their meal. WILL NOT BE COMING BACK HERE ABSOLUTELY DESGUSTING!!!
Wow...we went for an evening meal and enjoyed the food that much we went back for a 2nd night. The staff were really friendly and the pub itself is really nice. We sat in an outside booth and took advantage of the fire pit which is a great idea. Would 100% recommend this place.
Lovely food, amazing onion gravy. Good value for the food especially the sides. Drinks are also very affordable. The music were nostalgic 2000s bops and I was loving it.
