The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel lies in the Great Langdale valley, this extended inn has welcomed fell walkers and climbers for more than 300 years. Run by Jane and Neil Walmsley for the National Trust, it has comfortable, country-style bedrooms, open fires,
Most guests call in at our Hikers Bar first, where a selection of real ales provides a just reward after a long drive or a hard day of fell and rock. However if real ale is not your first choice, there is a large selection of the finest Scottish whiskies and a large wine cellar. We often have live entertainment, in the form of occasional open music nights where we encourage anyone to get up and play. The Bar always has a friendly, lively spirit about the place, where people enjoy sharing experiences of the local walks and climbs conquered.
Food is served throughout the day in the Hikers bar from 12pm until 9pm.
A visit to the walkers bar that felt more like calling in at the Slaughtered Lamb, simply due to the lack of hospitality and pleasantries from the bar man. This needs to be improved given the high quality competition that exists in the other 2 pubs/bars little more than half a mile away.
Fabulous location. Well kept, lovely real ales in the climbers bar. The rooms were clean and warm. Breakfast was excellent. I didn’t have the evening meal as I arrived late but they did ring to ask if I wanted anything let for me. Used as a base for walking and I couldn’t fault the hotel the staff. I will definitely be back!
Bar review...Loved the characters behind the bar and the chap (attempting) to play his accordion was quite entertaining. Warm welcome, eventhough I had obviously only walked from the campsite and not up any serious fells! Hearty food (try the sausage n mash) and nice fire going too. Will be back in next time we stop at GL campsite across the road...might even manage an actual hike first. X
Unbeatable location in Langdale. Perfect for a few pints and a good plate of food after hiking in the Langdale area. Only ever been in the climbers bar but it's always warm, good beer and banter.
It’s a great place to go after a day in the hills. The bar is timeless, dogs welcome. They have a good selection of beer. I didn’t try the food but I saw some coke out and it looked good. This is my 4th visit.
